We are headed to Savannah midweek for two days coming up (quick stop before a sports commitment.) Which squares would be worth exploring with preteen girls? We will be staying near Franklin Square. They are not much for history or walking but I want them to see a little bit. (We parents have been before but it’s been awhile.) I think we want to see Forsyth Park.
We have dinner booked at Pirates House one night and planning a driving ghost tour. Thanks!
Visiting Savannah with preteen girls can be a wonderful experience, especially when focusing on the city's beautiful squares and more interactive attractions. Here are a few suggestions for squares and activities that should be enjoyable for both you and your girls:
1. Forsyth Park: Since you already mentioned Forsyth Park, it's a great choice. The park is very popular and offers a variety of activities that can keep your girls entertained without overwhelming them. The iconic Forsyth Fountain is a must-see and is often a favorite for photos. There are also plenty of green spaces where they can run around, and you’ll find benches where you can relax. There's also a lovely playground if they enjoy some downtime to play.
2. Franklin Square: You’re already staying near Franklin Square, so this is a perfect spot to start your exploration. It's one of the smaller squares, but it’s close to some fun places. For instance, the American Prohibition Museum is right next door. While it’s mostly about history, it has some interactive exhibits and a speakeasy-themed bar which might be more engaging for preteens and adults alike. There’s also a nice little green area in Franklin Square where you can enjoy the outdoors.
3. Chippewa Square: This square is one of the most famous in Savannah, largely because it was featured in the movie Forrest Gump. The bench where Forrest sat is located here, and it’s a fun photo opportunity for the girls, especially if they’re familiar with the movie. Chippewa Square also has a lot of benches and some lovely old trees for shade. It’s a great place to sit for a bit and let the girls enjoy the view.
4. Johnson Square: Johnson Square is one of Savannah's largest and most impressive squares. It’s home to the oldest statue in Savannah, dedicated to James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia. The square is large enough for the girls to wander around without getting too bored, and it’s a beautiful spot for pictures and enjoying the scenery.
5. Washington Square: This square is known for its calm and quieter atmosphere, perfect if your girls enjoy a peaceful place to relax. It's a great spot to take a break from walking, and there’s a small playground here too. The architecture around this square is stunning, and you can enjoy the lovely ambiance of the area.
6. Savannah Waterfront (River Street): While not a square, Savannah’s River Street is an exciting area to visit with the girls. You can stroll along the cobblestone streets, watch street performers, and pop into some of the quirky shops. There are candy shops and ice cream parlors that are perfect for a quick treat. It’s not too much walking, but there’s still plenty to see and do.
Additional Fun Ideas:
In summary, Savannah has plenty to offer for a family trip with preteens. With the squares, parks, and a mix of interactive experiences, you’ll have a memorable and enjoyable time without too much walking. Forsyth Park and Franklin Square will give you a good starting point, but the other squares and attractions like River Street and a ghost tour will add some excitement to your visit.
