Fishing rod for the pier

Hello! My 13 year old son would like to fish from the pier on the one day we will have at the beach. What’s the easiest way to get a fishing rod and bait to do this? We are flying in, so I don’t know if we should pick up a fishing rod at Walmart on our way, or if there are rental places nearby to rent the rod, etc. We don’t need heavy duty equipment, it is just for the fun and experience of it all. Thank you!

Fishing from the Huntington Beach Pier can be a fun and easy experience, especially for a first-time young angler. Since you’re flying in and only have a day, you have a few convenient options for getting a rod and bait without bringing your own gear.

Options for obtaining a fishing rod and bait:

  • Renting directly near the pier: Several local shops near Huntington Beach Pier offer fishing rod rentals, tackle, and bait. This is often the simplest option since you don’t have to carry or transport equipment.
  • Local sporting goods stores: Stores like Walmart, Target, or nearby local tackle shops can sell beginner-friendly rods, reels, and bait. This is a good option if you want to keep the rod as a souvenir or practice at home later.
  • Fishing package rentals: Some shops offer complete “pier fishing kits” which include rod, reel, line, hooks, sinkers, and bait. These are very convenient for beginners and first-time experiences.

Tips for a smooth experience:

  • Check the pier regulations: Huntington Beach Pier allows pier fishing without a special license for children under 16, but adults may need a California fishing license.
  • Arrive early: Weekends and summer days can be busy. Arriving early will help secure a good spot and get any rented equipment without a wait.
  • Use simple bait: For beginners, common pier bait like squid, anchovies, or sand crabs works well and is easy to handle.
  • Ask for assistance: Most rental shops will help you rig the rod and provide instructions, which is especially helpful for a 13-year-old.

Overall, renting a rod and buying bait locally near the pier is the easiest and least stressful approach for your day trip, especially since you’re flying in. This way you can focus on the fun of fishing rather than transporting gear.
