Skagway v Ketchikan

I have a choice of 2 cruises, which are almost identical except for 2 stops: one gies to Skagway while the other stops at Ketchikan. What is the difference and pros & cons of Skagway v Ketchikan,

Skagway and Ketchikan are both popular Alaska cruise ports, but they offer very different experiences, so your choice will depend on the type of scenery, activities, and vibe you prefer.

Skagway:

Skagway is a small historic town at the northern end of the Inside Passage, famous for its Gold Rush history. It’s ideal for scenic rail excursions, outdoor adventures, and historic exploration.

  • Pros:
    • Historic charm – well-preserved Gold Rush-era buildings and museums.
    • Great rail excursions – the White Pass & Yukon Railroad is a scenic highlight, climbing steep mountains with waterfalls and panoramic views.
    • Outdoor activities – easy access to hikes, ziplining, and dog sled experiences (even summer glacier tours).
    • Less commercial – smaller port, easier to navigate.
  • Cons:
    • Smaller town – fewer dining or shopping options compared to Ketchikan.
    • Limited in-town walking options for casual sightseeing beyond the main street and train station area.

Ketchikan:

Ketchikan is further south in the Inside Passage and is known as the “Salmon Capital of the World.” It offers rich native culture, lush rainforest scenery, and a more urban feel.

  • Pros:
    • Totem heritage – numerous totem parks showcasing Native Alaskan art and history.
    • Lush scenery – surrounded by temperate rainforest, waterfalls, and rivers; great for short hikes and wildlife viewing.
    • Fishing and kayaking – strong options for active excursions on water.
    • Shopping and local food – larger town with more restaurants, souvenir shops, and craft markets.
  • Cons:
    • More commercialized – port area is busier, more cruise ship-oriented.
    • Less Gold Rush history – if that interests you, Skagway is better.

Summary: Choose Skagway if you want a quaint, historic town with rail excursions and mountain scenery. Choose Ketchikan if you prefer lush rainforest, native culture, and more variety in shops and tours. Both offer opportunities for short hikes and wildlife viewing, but the vibe and scenery are distinct.
