Soldotna bear/fishing trip timing
We have a flight/boat trip booked with Talonair for July 22nd at 8:30am from Soldotna.
I am having second thoughts about the tour time. I know the weather/fog/wind is unpredicatable but what start time is best in general. 8:30 or 12?
Its a 30min flight and Im starting to wonder if it might be too foggy for a good view in the morning?
I was told all tour times are the same in terms of visibility. Any thoughts?
When planning your bear and fishing trip from Soldotna, it's understandable to have concerns about the timing due to unpredictable weather conditions like fog and wind. Here's some advice on the timing of your tour and considerations regarding visibility:
Weather and Visibility Considerations:
- Morning Flights (8:30 AM): Generally, mornings tend to have more fog and low clouds, especially in coastal or mountainous regions like Alaska. While it’s true that weather can be unpredictable, mornings often experience cooler temperatures, which can cause fog or mist to form, reducing visibility. That said, early mornings can also offer calmer winds, which might make for a smoother flight.
- Midday Flights (12:00 PM): By noon, the temperature has typically warmed up, and fog tends to burn off. This means you are more likely to have clearer skies and better visibility. However, midday flights might experience stronger winds, which could affect the comfort of your flight and potentially the fishing conditions, especially if you're flying over more turbulent or open waters.
Flight and Tour Visibility:
It's true that visibility can be impacted at any time of day due to the nature of the weather, especially in Alaska where conditions change rapidly. However, some general trends to consider:
- In the morning, fog is more likely to obscure the view, but as temperatures warm up through the day, the fog can lift.
- As for the flight itself, the 30-minute duration isn't long, so even if there is some fog initially, there’s a good chance it will clear up during the flight or when you arrive at your destination.
- The flight time itself, while short, could be a good chance to experience a scenic view of the landscape if the weather cooperates.
Recommendations:
- If you’re more concerned about getting the clearest views possible, consider switching to the 12:00 PM time. You are more likely to avoid fog and have better visibility after the morning haze has cleared.
- That being said, if your schedule works best with the 8:30 AM tour and you're okay with the possibility of some fog, you may still have a great experience—just be prepared for potentially limited visibility initially. The guide will likely have experience navigating these conditions, and the wildlife experience can still be excellent.
- Check the weather forecast the night before your tour to get a sense of the expected conditions for the next day. Some tours are flexible and may allow last-minute changes based on weather conditions, so it’s worth asking about that when confirming your booking.
Conclusion: Overall, while mornings might offer a slightly higher risk of fog, both times (8:30 AM and 12 PM) have their pros. If you’re after the clearest visibility, midday would be the best bet, but if you’re ready for an adventure and don’t mind a bit of uncertainty with weather, the early flight might still offer a great experience. It’s always good to have backup plans and be flexible, especially in a place with such dynamic weather.
