TWOV - multi stops in china

Hello,

I have a UK passport and i am flying from Syndey - Haikou - Changsha - London April 3rd with Hainan airline. Do i need a visa? I have researched and researched about the 24hour and 240hour visa but there is no proper website that says anything about my domestic flight from haikou - Changsha needing a visa or not?

I will be in China less than 24hours but I want proof to show border control or check in staff if they ask for it on check in. I know people have been turned away because of this in the past.

Any help much appreciated.

For your itinerary (Sydney → Haikou → Changsha → London) with Hainan Airlines in April, you will need to consider China’s transit visa policies carefully.

Key points regarding your situation:

  • China offers a 24-hour visa-free transit (TWOV)
  • However, your itinerary involves a domestic flight from Haikou to Changsha
  • Therefore, for your plan to travel from Haikou to Changsha, you will require a standard Chinese visa

Additional recommendations:

  • Obtain a standard tourist visa (L visa) for China before departure. This ensures smooth check-in and boarding at Sydney and prevents being denied entry.
  • Carry all relevant travel documents, including confirmed airline tickets for your onward flight from Changsha to London, to show immigration if requested.
  • Check with Hainan Airlines and the Chinese consulate to ensure the visa type matches your transit plan and domestic flight connections.

In short, even though your total time in China is under 24 hours, because you will fly domestically from Haikou to Changsha, you cannot rely on the 24-hour visa-free transit. You need a standard Chinese visa before traveling.
