Ferry booked?

Looking for a way to get from Homer to Seldovia. It looks as though both the Alaska Marine Highway and the Seldovia Bay Ferry are booked for the three days we are in town(June 11-13). Ideas?

Traveling from Homer to Seldovia when both the Alaska Marine Highway and Seldovia Bay Ferry are fully booked can be challenging, but there are a few alternative options you can consider.

Alternative transportation options:

  • Water taxi services: Several local operators run water taxis between Homer and Seldovia. They often accommodate smaller groups and can be more flexible than the scheduled ferries. You may need to call or email directly to check for availability, especially during peak summer dates.
  • Private boat charters: If cost is not a major concern, private charters can provide a direct route to Seldovia at your preferred time. Some companies offer round-trip or one-way service and can also include sightseeing along Kachemak Bay.
  • Kayak or small craft rentals: For experienced paddlers, kayaking or renting a small motorized craft is an option, though weather conditions and tides must be carefully considered. This is generally only recommended for strong, confident paddlers.

Tips for booking:

  • Contact water taxi operators as early as possible—many keep a few seats for walk-ins or last-minute reservations, especially for morning departures.
  • Ask about shared rides with other travelers if private charters are too expensive; sometimes you can join an existing group.
  • Check social media or local visitor centers in Homer for updated announcements about cancellations or extra sailings, particularly in summer when demand is high.
  • Consider flexibility in your travel dates or times—early mornings or late afternoons may have more availability.

In summary, while the official ferry routes are booked, water taxis or private charters are your best legal and practical options to get from Homer to Seldovia during your stay. Early planning and direct contact with operators will maximize your chances of securing passage.
