Whales?!?!
Hi! My friend & I, both in our 40’s, will be in Homer for about 4 days in July. Still working on dates. We will be flying in to a We will be flying in to Anchorage, again have not booked flights yet.
Where can we have a good chance of seeing whales in this region? We will have a car and and are also willing to go on a boat but not an overnight cruise. Thank you for your suggestions!
Homer is one of the best places in Alaska for whale watching, particularly for humpback whales that feed in the waters of Kachemak Bay and the surrounding areas. July is an excellent time to visit because the whales are very active during the summer months, often breaching and feeding near shore.
Options for Whale Watching
- Boat Tours: Taking a guided boat tour out of Homer Harbor is the most reliable way to see whales up close. Tours typically last 4–6 hours and include knowledgeable naturalist guides who can help spot whales and other marine wildlife.
- Kachemak Bay State Park: Many tours venture into Kachemak Bay, which offers beautiful scenery along with frequent sightings of humpback whales, sea otters, and puffins. You can also see orcas occasionally.
- Kayaking with Wildlife Guides: For a more active and immersive experience, some companies offer guided kayak trips in the bay that might include whale watching. This option allows you to get closer to the water but still with expert guidance.
- Shore Viewing: While less reliable than boat tours, whales can sometimes be spotted from certain points along the Homer Spit or other elevated areas overlooking Kachemak Bay. Bring binoculars and check with local centers for recent whale sightings.
Planning Tips
- Book your boat tour in advance, especially in July, as tours can fill up quickly.
- Dress in layers and bring waterproof gear—the waters can be chilly and spray is common.
- Bring binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens for better wildlife viewing.
- Check tide and weather conditions as some tour companies may adjust departure times for safety and better wildlife viewing.
- Arrive in Homer at least a day before your whale tour to explore the town, visit the Homer Spit, and enjoy local restaurants.
In summary, for the best chance of seeing whales, a daytime boat tour from Homer Harbor into Kachemak Bay is highly recommended. Shoreline viewing can supplement your experience, but the guided tours maximize your opportunities to see whales and other wildlife safely and comfortably.
