Question: Help on order of locations.

We are flying into San Francisco in July. We will be staying 11 days. We want to spend time in

San Francisco, Napa, Tahoe, and Monterey.

Our current plan is to stay in San Francisco Sat-Wed, Drive to Tahoe Wed-Sat, Drive back to Napa Sat-Monday, Monterey Monday-Wednesday. Fly out of San Francisco on that Wed night.

Are there any major problems anyone sees with that plan. Suggestion totally welcome! Thanks!

Your current plan for visiting San Francisco, Tahoe, Napa, and Monterey over 11 days is feasible, but there are a few logistical points and timing considerations worth noting to optimize your trip.

Here’s a detailed analysis of your itinerary:

  • San Francisco Sat-Wed: Spending 4 days in SF is a solid choice. This allows time to explore key neighborhoods (Fisherman’s Wharf, Union Square, Mission, Haight-Ashbury), take a day trip to Alcatraz, or enjoy the Golden Gate Park and Golden Gate Bridge viewpoints. Traffic and parking can be challenging, so plan for public transport or rideshares within the city.
  • Drive to Tahoe Wed-Sat: Tahoe is about a 3.5–4 hour drive from SF depending on traffic and your destination within the lake region. Three days here is ideal for light hiking, lakeside relaxation, or water activities. Keep in mind that weekend crowds in July can be significant, particularly around South Lake Tahoe.
  • Drive to Napa Sat-Mon: This drive takes approximately 3.5–4 hours. Spending 2 nights in Napa is sufficient for a few winery visits and a relaxed pace. Consider booking wineries in advance, as July is busy with tourists.
  • Monterey Mon-Wed, fly out Wed night: Monterey is about a 2.5–3 hour drive from Napa. Two nights gives you time to visit the Aquarium, Cannery Row, 17-Mile Drive, and Carmel. Returning to San Francisco for a late-night flight is manageable (roughly 2 hours from Monterey) if you leave with plenty of buffer time for traffic and car rental return.

Potential considerations and suggestions:

  • Switching the order: Some travelers prefer visiting Monterey before Tahoe to minimize long drives in the heat and mountain roads after city traffic. For example, SF → Napa → Monterey → Tahoe → SF for departure. This avoids a long drive from Tahoe back to Napa, which can be tiring after a weekend.
  • Driving fatigue: You have several multi-hour drives (SF → Tahoe, Tahoe → Napa, Napa → Monterey, Monterey → SF). Consider breaking up drives with stops or scenic routes to reduce fatigue.
  • Peak season traffic: July is high season in all these locations, so book accommodations and any activities in advance to avoid disappointment.
  • Flight timing: Flying out late Wednesday gives flexibility, but make sure to leave early enough from Monterey to handle traffic, rental car return, and airport security.

Overall, your plan is workable and covers all desired destinations, but slight adjustments to the order could reduce driving strain and improve flow. Prioritizing key activities in each location and accounting for traffic and peak season crowds will help you enjoy a smoother trip.
