Christmas in Grand Lake

We are planning a Christmas vacation to Grand Lake Dec 22-26. I was just wondering if there will be things to do. Will places be open that close to Christmas? We are hoping to snowmobile and tubing and probably do some shopping.

Grand Lake, Colorado, is a charming mountain town and a popular winter destination. Visiting during Christmas (Dec 22–26) offers a beautiful snowy setting, but it’s important to plan ahead because it’s a busy holiday period, and some local businesses may have limited hours around Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

For winter activities like snowmobiling and tubing, Grand Lake is well-equipped. Snowmobile rentals and tours are widely available in the area, especially in the nearby Arapaho National Forest and along groomed trails. Tubing is usually available at local resorts and some ski areas within a short drive.

  • Snowmobiling: Several local outfitters offer guided tours, including half-day and full-day options. Booking in advance is recommended during the Christmas week, as spots fill up quickly.
  • Snow tubing: The tubing hills in Grand Lake or nearby Winter Park and Granby Ranch are popular with families. Check individual resorts for holiday hours.
  • Skiing and snowboarding: If your group is interested, Winter Park Resort is about 30 minutes away and offers a wide range of slopes for all skill levels.

For shopping and dining, Grand Lake has quaint shops and local boutiques. Many remain open during the holiday season, but some may close early on Christmas Eve and be closed on Christmas Day, so plan accordingly.

  • Shopping: Small local shops and gift stores in the town center often stay open until Christmas Eve. You’ll find unique holiday gifts, outdoor gear, and local crafts.
  • Dining: Restaurants and cafes may have special holiday hours. Popular spots can be busy, so consider making reservations in advance, especially for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day meals.
  • Holiday events: Some local events may take place, such as holiday lighting ceremonies or small town festivities, though these can vary year to year.

Other tips for your Christmas trip:

  • Check weather and road conditions frequently, as winter storms can affect travel in the mountains.
  • Book accommodations, activities, and rentals well in advance to secure availability during the busy holiday week.
  • Consider having a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, in case of inclement weather.

In summary, Grand Lake offers plenty of winter activities for a Christmas vacation, including snowmobiling, tubing, skiing, and shopping. While some shops and restaurants may have limited hours, careful planning will ensure you have a memorable holiday experience surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery.
