Ketchikan airport

I have tried to figure this out on my own, but am finding conflicting information.

Does KTN stay open overnight and can I sleep in the airport?

I'll be arriving a day ahead of the rest of my party and I would prefer not to get a hotel room for one night if it can be avoided.

Thanks.

The short answer is: the Ketchikan International Airport (KTN) does not reliably stay open for the public overnight for sleeping, and it is not recommended to plan to spend the night in the terminal. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what my research found and things you should consider.

What you will find:

  • The airport’s publicly-accessible passenger terminal is listed as being open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. according to a travel-guide site.
  • The ferry that connects the airport (on Gravina Island) to the city of Ketchikan runs only from about 6:15 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. according to the airport website.
  • A user posting on travel forums noted: “There is no free overnight stay at Ketchikan airport.”

What this means for you:

If you arrive a day ahead of your party and wish to sleep overnight at KTN rather than getting a hotel, here are the risks and limitations you should consider:

  • Since the terminal may close for public access after ~8:45 p.m., it may not be accessible overnight in the way a large 24-hour airport is.
  • The ferry connection to town closes (~9:30 p.m.), so if you did stay overnight you’d likely be cut off from mainland Ketchikan until morning. That means no easy way to leave the island or get back from downtown after hours.
  • Facilities for sleeping are minimal or non-existent: no dedicated rest / sleep zones, no cots listed, and very limited late-night food or services.
  • Security or maintenance staff could ask you to leave, especially after hours. Because there are mixed reports, you might find it technically possible, but it is not guaranteed or comfortable.

What to ask/confirm if you still attempt it:

  • Call the airport administration (phone listed as (907) 225-6800 per airport site) and ask: “Is the terminal accessible overnight for non-departing passengers?”
  • Check your flight arrival time: If you arrive after the ferry and terminal hours, you may find yourself stranded without transport or services.
  • Have a backup plan: Know the location of a nearby hotel or lodging just in case you cannot stay overnight in the airport.
  • Bring your own sleeping gear (blanket, pillow, earplugs) and be prepared for a sparse environment: the airport guide lists no lounge, no 24-hour food, no dedicated quiet area.

My recommendation:

Given the ferry hour limitation and the terminal hours, for most travellers it will be safer and more comfortable to book a one-night hotel near Ketchikan rather than rely on sleeping in the airport. While you may find a spot in the terminal, it comes with risk of being locked out, isolated, or without services.
