Sights on Drive From Phoenix to Flagstaff
Greetings,
Flying in next Friday the 4th and splitting time between the Flagstaff area and Phoenix. Our flight arrives at 7:00 AM and then we're driving to Flagstaff. My question is what sight or things can we do on our drive north? We were thinking of going to Sedona on the drive back on Tuesday the 8th but should we make a stop on the way up as well? What other things can we do on our drive?
The drive from Phoenix to Flagstaff (via I-17) is one of the most scenic stretches in Arizona, and since you’re landing early in the morning, you’ll have plenty of daylight to enjoy a few great stops. You can absolutely save Sedona for the drive back, but there are still several worthwhile sights right along the route northbound.
Below are the best options arranged in the order you’ll encounter them when driving from Phoenix to Flagstaff, along with tips on how long each stop might take so you can choose based on your schedule and energy after the flight.
Top Stops Between Phoenix and Flagstaff (Northbound)
- Montezuma Castle National Monument (Camp Verde) – A very easy, quick stop just minutes off I-17. This remarkably preserved cliff dwelling is one of the most accessible archaeological sites in the region. The entire walk is flat and takes about 30–45 minutes.
- Montezuma Well – A few miles from Montezuma Castle, this natural limestone sinkhole fed by an underground spring is both scenic and historically significant. Takes about 30–45 minutes to explore.
- Out of Africa Wildlife Park – Located in Camp Verde. More of a half-day stop, so only consider this if you want a longer attraction. Offers safari-type experiences and wildlife shows.
- Fort Verde State Historic Park – For those interested in Old West history, this well-preserved frontier fort is an easy stop in Camp Verde. Plan about 1–1.5 hours.
- Red Rock Scenic Viewpoints (just before Sedona turn-off) – Even if you’re saving Sedona for later, you can stop at a viewpoint near the Village of Oak Creek exit for quick photos of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte without committing to a full Sedona visit.
If you'd like a slightly longer scenic diversion on the way up (optional):
- Jerome – A historic mining town perched on a mountain. This adds time because it’s west of I-17 via Hwy 260 and 89A, but it’s incredibly unique, with great views, quirky shops, and restaurants. Takes 1–3 hours depending on interest.
- Tuzigoot National Monument – Near Cottonwood and Jerome. A hilltop pueblo site with sweeping valley views. A calm, easy walk.
Short Nature Walk Options (little effort, big payoff):
- Wet Beaver Creek / Montezuma Well riparian areas – If you want a stretch-your-legs nature moment, these trails offer shade and water features. Perfect for a quick break after your flight.
- Mogollon Rim Overlooks (around the Rim Road areas) – If you want pine forests and sweeping views before hitting Flagstaff’s elevation, short detours east off I-17 lead to beautiful viewpoints.
Tips for Timing & Planning
If you arrive at 7:00 AM, by the time you pick up your rental car you’ll likely be on the road around 8:00 AM. The drive to Flagstaff is about 2 hours nonstop, but with a couple of small stops, plan for 3–4 hours at a relaxed pace.
If you want your biggest sightseeing day to be on the return trip through Sedona, the options above give you quick, low-effort stops that break up the drive without overlapping too much with your Sedona visit.
Recommended Strategy
- Make one or two short stops—Montezuma Castle + a Bell Rock viewpoint are perfect.
- Continue to Flagstaff, check in, and enjoy the rest of the day at altitude without overscheduling.
- Save your deeper sightseeing for Sedona on the drive back as planned.
You’ll get a scenic, relaxed drive north and still keep Sedona as the highlight of the return trip.
