Rainy Weather Plan Bs
We, a multigenerational family group of 8 in two vehicles are booked to stay in Santa Rosa March 30 to April 5. I notice the forecasts of rain during that period and am looking for advice on possible plan Bs due to the weather.
No wineries. Among sites we want to see are: Fort Bragg, Jack London State Park, Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, Sebastopol...for Florence Avenue...town of Sonoma.
Grateful for all views.
Visiting Sonoma County in late March and early April can indeed bring some rainy days, so it’s smart to have Plan Bs ready. Even with rain, there are plenty of indoor or sheltered activities, and some outdoor options are still feasible if you have proper rain gear.
For a multigenerational group, mixing indoor cultural, educational, and light outdoor activities is ideal. Here are some ideas:
- Museums and Cultural Centers: Santa Rosa and nearby towns offer several indoor attractions. Consider the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, which has exhibits on the Peanuts comic strip and Snoopy memorabilia, suitable for all ages.
- Historic Sites: Jack London State Historic Park has a museum and indoor exhibits. Even if the trails are wet, the main house and museum provide insight into Jack London’s life.
- Local Art Galleries: Sebastopol and Santa Rosa have small galleries showcasing local artists. These can be enjoyable for a slower paced, indoor activity.
- Shopping and Indoor Exploration: Florence Avenue in Sebastopol has quaint shops and cafes where you can spend time indoors. Town of Sonoma also has historic buildings, tasting rooms (non-wine options available), and restaurants where you can shelter from the rain.
- Aquatic and Recreational Centers: If your group enjoys swimming or indoor sports, check for community centers with pools or gyms in Santa Rosa or Sebastopol.
If the weather is lighter rain or drizzle, some outdoor options remain accessible:
- Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve: Rain can enhance the experience, as the forest smells fresh and the redwoods are majestic in misty conditions. Trails are often well-maintained and relatively flat, but waterproof boots and rain jackets are recommended.
- Fort Bragg Coastal Areas: The Glass Beach area can be explored even in rain, and the small shops in town provide indoor respite. Just keep in mind the coastal wind and wet conditions.
- Drive-through Scenic Routes: Consider scenic drives through vineyards or along the Sonoma coastline. Even if it’s raining, the views are beautiful from the car, and you can make stops at covered spots.
Other tips for rainy days:
- Plan indoor lunches or early dinners at local restaurants to break up your day.
- Keep flexible scheduling; check weather forecasts each morning and pivot activities accordingly.
- Bring waterproof jackets, boots, and umbrellas so that even short outdoor walks are comfortable.
With these options, you can have a rich and enjoyable Sonoma County experience regardless of rain, mixing indoor educational/cultural stops with light outdoor explorations when weather permits.
