Where to stay in Flagstaff

We are planning to stay in Flagstaff for an 8 days and will use that as our home base to travel to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Monument Valley (and whatever else we can see). Currently we are checking out rental homes on AirBnB and VRBO but would like to know in which areas of Flagstaff are best to stay. We will have a rental car. Thanks!

Flagstaff makes an excellent home base for northern Arizona, especially with 8 days to explore the region. With a rental car, you’ll have access to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Monument Valley, Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater, Wupatki, and plenty of hiking around town. Since you’re looking at AirBnB/VRBO options, the specific neighborhood you choose can make a big difference in convenience, quietness, and ease of driving.

Flagstaff has several very visitor-friendly areas, and each has its own advantages depending on what you want—proximity to restaurants, easy highway access for day trips, more natural surroundings, or a quieter residential feel.

Below are the best areas to stay in Flagstaff for a week-long base, especially with your planned day trips:

  • Downtown / Historic Downtown Flagstaff – The most walkable and lively part of town. Tons of local restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, and boutiques. Close to Route 66 and a short drive to I-40/I-17 for day trips. Some rentals can be older and parking can be tight, but it’s the best spot for evening activities.
  • University Heights / Woodlands Village (near NAU) – South Flagstaff; quiet residential streets mixed with newer condo developments. Very convenient to I-17 (great for Sedona/Phoenix-day trips) and close to groceries/restaurants. Less charm than downtown but easy and central.
  • Country Club / Continental Country Club (East Flagstaff) – One of the most popular Airbnb areas. Safe, quiet, suburban feel with pine trees, golf course views, and good walking paths. Excellent access to I-40 for Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater, Winslow, and exploring the national monuments.
  • Ponderosa Trails / Pine Canyon / Mountain Dell – South side neighborhoods known for forest surroundings, newer homes, and privacy. Ideal if you want peace and quiet after long sightseeing days. Still close to highways without feeling urban.
  • Northwest Flagstaff (near Cheshire / Coconino Estates) – Very convenient for the road to the Snowbowl and Grand Canyon. Quiet and established neighborhoods, lots of tall pines, and fast access to Highway 180. Great if the Grand Canyon is a priority.

Each of these areas has strengths depending on how you plan your trip. Because you will be doing long day trips (Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Sedona), easy highway access and a peaceful environment can really improve the experience.

Here are a few practical considerations to help you decide:

  • For the Grand Canyon and Snowbowl access: Choose Northwest Flagstaff or Cheshire (closest to Hwy 180).
  • For Sedona and southern day trips: South Flagstaff/University Heights has the quickest drive to I-17.
  • For walking to restaurants, breweries, and nightlife: Stay Downtown/Historic District.
  • For quiet, comfort, and easy freeway access to everything east or west: Country Club area is ideal.
  • For forest settings and newer vacation homes: Pine Canyon, Ponderosa Trails, and other south-side residential neighborhoods are excellent.

For an 8-day base, the most popular choices tend to be Downtown (for convenience and atmosphere) or Country Club / East Flagstaff (for quiet and great access to all major highways). If you prefer peaceful nights and easy parking, East or South Flagstaff usually wins. If you want a lively environment to walk around after long day trips, Downtown is the best choice.

No matter which area you choose, Flagstaff will place you within reasonable reach of all your planned destinations, and the rental-home options in these neighborhoods are among the best in northern Arizona.
