Which order? COS, Breckenridge, Estes Park
Hi! Planning an August trip for 4 (2 adults and 2 daughters 20 & 18. Flying into Denver, would you start in COS, then Breckenridge, and then take Trail Ridge Road the to Estes Park?
7 nights total, 3 COS, 2 Breck, 2 Estes Park. Originally was not looking at Breckenridge but other places we are intersted in seem like a lot more driving (Crested Butte, Beaver Creek, Steamboat Springs).
Your planned sequence of Colorado Springs (COS), Breckenridge, then Estes Park is a logical route for a 7-night trip and keeps driving times reasonable while allowing you to experience a variety of landscapes.
Here’s a suggested breakdown:
- Days 1–3: Colorado Springs – Flying into Denver and driving south to COS is straightforward (~1.5 hours). Spend these days exploring Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak (via the Cog Railway or driving), the U.S. Air Force Academy, and local downtown areas. This allows a relaxed start after your flight.
- Days 4–5: Breckenridge – Drive from COS to Breckenridge (~2.5–3 hours). Breckenridge offers charming historic downtown streets, easy hikes, scenic gondola rides, and mountain views. This stop breaks up your trip nicely and offers a high-altitude mountain experience without overly strenuous activity.
- Days 6–7: Estes Park – From Breckenridge, take Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park to Estes Park (~3–3.5 hours). This route provides spectacular scenery and allows you to enjoy the park’s wildlife and easy walks or short hikes. Estes Park can be your base for exploring RMNP before returning to Denver (~1.5–2 hours) for your departure.
Other considerations:
- If you prefer a more relaxed pace, you could swap Breckenridge and Estes Park. This would reduce your driving on the day of Trail Ridge Road, allowing a more scenic, unhurried experience.
- Be mindful of summer traffic in RMNP, especially on Trail Ridge Road. Starting early in the morning helps avoid congestion and maximizes wildlife viewing.
- Accommodations in all three locations can fill up quickly in August, so booking early is recommended.
- Pack for varied conditions—COS is lower and warmer, Breckenridge is mid-elevation with cooler nights, and RMNP/Estes Park is high elevation where afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer.
In summary, your order of COS → Breckenridge → Estes Park is practical and allows for a balanced mix of city, mountain town, and national park experiences without excessive backtracking.
