Family Roadtrip Potential Locations/Itinerary
Looking for some ideas on locations for an upcoming summer trip to Colorado this July - 7 nights, 6 full days, will be there over 4th!
We are driving from KS. Two adults, two kids under 7, one dog.
We are trying to determine whether we should stay in one family friendly location or split up our trip on a loop through Colorado, back to Kansas.
We want to focus on family friendly areas and would love some mild hiking, fishing and low key outdoor activities. We are foodies! We would love to find a good spot for fireworks on the 4th too!
Per day, I think we’re willing to drive up to an hour one way for a must-see activity.
Would love some suggestions or resources on where to start. Im feeling overwhelmed with the amount that Colorado has to offer!
Colorado in July is fantastic for a family road trip, especially with kids under 7 and a dog. With 7 nights and 6 full days, you have a few options: stay in one central location and do day trips, or split your trip across a loop to see multiple regions. Since your daily driving limit is about an hour each way, staying in one or two base locations will maximize relaxation and minimize long travel days.
Here are some family-friendly base locations and activities within a roughly one-hour drive:
- Estes Park / Rocky Mountain National Park:
- Mild hikes such as Bear Lake, Sprague Lake, and Alberta Falls.
- Fishing in local streams and lakes.
- Family-friendly wildlife viewing (elk, moose, and deer).
- 4th of July fireworks in Estes Park Town Park.
- Nearby dining: many kid-friendly restaurants and casual food options in Estes Park.
- Colorado Springs:
- Garden of the Gods for easy hiking trails with breathtaking red rock formations.
- Pikes Peak scenic drive or Manitou Springs for sightseeing.
- Cheyenne Mountain Zoo for family fun.
- Local lakes and small streams for fishing.
- Fireworks: Downtown Colorado Springs often has 4th of July displays.
- Fraser / Winter Park area:
- Alpine lakes and gentle hiking trails suitable for kids.
- Fishing in nearby lakes and rivers.
- Summer activities: alpine slides, mini-golf, and scenic chairlifts.
- Less crowded than major resort towns but still family-oriented.
Suggested approach for your 7-night trip:
- Option 1 – Single Base: Stay in one location like Estes Park or Colorado Springs. Each day, take a day trip within an hour radius for hiking, sightseeing, and food experiences. This minimizes packing/unpacking and is less stressful with a dog and young kids.
- Option 2 – Two Bases / Loop: Split the trip: 3–4 nights in Estes Park for mountain and nature experiences, then 3 nights in Colorado Springs to explore red rock formations, cultural sites, and fireworks. This allows a mix of mountain scenery and city conveniences without overly long drives each day.
Other tips:
- Book accommodations early, especially for the 4th of July, as Estes Park and Colorado Springs fill quickly.
- Look for pet-friendly lodging if bringing your dog.
- Bring picnic supplies for casual meals in scenic areas; many trails have picnic spots.
- Check local calendars for 4th of July events to plan the best fireworks viewing.
Overall, Estes Park or Colorado Springs are excellent central bases with easy access to family-friendly hikes, fishing spots, and good food. If you want a balance of mountains and local culture, splitting the trip between Estes Park and Colorado Springs is ideal.
