Public bus from Tashkurgan to Kashgar, any information?

Hi ! I will be crossing from Sost Pakistan over the Khunjerab pass, and spent a night or two in Tashkurgan to acclimatize before moving on to Kashgar. It is from Tashkurgan to Kashgar that I can't seem to find any information as to how to ride a public bus from Tashkurgan to Kashgar. Can anyone share any information such as do the public bus run everyday or only on some days? How much will it cost and how do we buy tickets and can we buy in advance? Where is the bus station located? Questions such as these. There seems to be a lack of information for this route. In the worse situation how do I share taxi to get to Kashgar? But hope to use bus as it's more economical and better view. Thank you.

Traveling from Tashkurgan to Kashgar by public transport is possible, but information is limited and schedules can change depending on the season and demand. Here is what you need to know:

The main option for a budget-friendly journey is the public bus. Buses from Tashkurgan to Kashgar are operated by local bus companies and usually depart from the Tashkurgan Bus Station, which is located near the town center. The distance is about 480 km and the journey can take around 8–10 hours, depending on road conditions.

  • Frequency: Buses typically run daily, but in low season or during public holidays, the schedule may be reduced. It is advisable to check locally at your hotel or the bus station for the exact departure time.
  • Ticket price: Tickets are very economical, usually around 150–200 CNY per person for a standard bus.
  • Buying tickets: Tickets are generally sold at the bus station on the day of departure. Advance booking is sometimes possible at the bus station, but online options are limited. Arriving early is recommended, especially in peak travel season.
  • Bus type: Most buses are standard coaches; some may have air-conditioning. Comfortable but basic, suitable for sightseeing along the route.

If public buses are full or schedules do not match your plan, shared taxis are a common alternative. You can hire a car with other travelers to split the cost:

  • Shared taxis can be arranged through your hotel or local guesthouses.
  • Cost for a shared taxi to Kashgar ranges from 800–1200 CNY per vehicle, depending on negotiations and how many passengers share the ride.
  • Travel time by car is slightly shorter than the bus, around 7–9 hours, and offers more flexibility for stops and sightseeing.

Tips:

  • Check weather conditions and road status, especially in winter, as passes may be closed due to snow.
  • Bring snacks, water, and layers of clothing as the journey is long and can be cold at higher elevations.
  • Have your ID or passport ready, as checkpoints are common along the route in Xinjiang.

In summary, the public bus is the most economical option and gives good views, but be prepared for early arrival and some flexibility in timing. Shared taxis are a reliable alternative if bus schedules are not convenient.
