Online check in

I just got an email asking me to check in online. I arrive tomorrow.

I know this would save me from standing in line but I was hoping for an upgrade. There would be no chance, right?

FWIW, I am staying at Luxor, cheapest room I could get. I was hoping at least for a tower room, maybe even a suite.

Or should I not bother.

Online check-in is a great way to save time and skip the front desk line when you arrive at Luxor, especially if you're arriving during a busy time. However, when it comes to upgrades, it's a bit of a mixed bag.

In general, upgrades are more likely to happen at check-in rather than online, and they depend on several factors:

  • Availability: If there are a lot of rooms available, especially suites or upgraded rooms, there might be a chance for an upgrade. But since you're staying in a standard, cheaper room, it’s less likely, though not impossible.
  • VIP Status or Loyalty: If you're a member of MGM's M Life rewards program and have a higher tier (like Pearl, Gold, or Platinum), you might have a better chance at an upgrade. If you're not a member or have a lower tier, upgrades are less common.
  • Timing: Upgrades are usually given at check-in, and availability can vary depending on how full the hotel is that night. It's also a bit about luck and if the front desk staff is feeling generous. Sometimes booking a bit closer to the date or during less busy times might increase your chances.
  • Special Requests: If you do online check-in and then call the hotel directly to inquire about upgrades, some hotels might be willing to accommodate requests, but again, it's not guaranteed. It's worth asking, though—just be polite and inquire if there are any upgrade options available upon check-in.

So, should you bother? Yes, online check-in is still worth doing, as it will save you time and streamline the process. If you’re hoping for an upgrade, you can still ask at the front desk when you arrive, even if you’ve already checked in online. The staff may be able to offer you an upgrade at that time, depending on availability. It doesn't hurt to ask politely if there are any upgrades available for your stay, especially since you'll be there for a couple of nights, and some guests may cancel or rooms may open up.

If you're looking for a tower room or suite, it's unlikely based on booking the cheapest room, but if they have availability, you might get lucky. Just don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t happen—you’ll still have a great time in Las Vegas!
