My questions are: Should I book the balloon ride at day 2 and do the hike day 4 in case wind is not cooperating and we need to reschedule. Which company of the two you'd recommend for the balloon ride? Also, is going to Jerome a stretch for that day? Any other suggestions are welcomed :) Thank you!

Your 4-night Sedona/Grand Canyon itinerary looks very well planned, balancing active outdoor experiences with sightseeing. Here’s a detailed review and some suggestions to help optimize your days.

Day 1 – Arrival + Pink Jeep Tour + Sunset

Your timing is reasonable. After a 10 AM arrival in Phoenix and 2-hour drive, grabbing a quick lunch near Sedona is smart. For dinner, if top restaurants are booked, consider these second-tier but still excellent options:

  • The Hudson – casual dining with great views and American cuisine
  • Elote Café – upscale Mexican (reservation recommended, sometimes accommodates walk-ins)
  • Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill – fine dining with panoramic views, call ahead

Day 2 – Devil’s Bridge Hike + Leisure + Chapel

The 4.2-mile round trip for Devil’s Bridge is moderate; starting early helps avoid crowds and midday heat. For Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, plan 1.5–2 hours to walk around galleries, shops, and have a light coffee or snack. For dinner, similar to Day 1, your backup options apply.

Day 3 – Grand Canyon Day Trip (South Rim)

Your plan to drive to the South Rim early is solid. Breakfast options:

  • Indian Gardens Café – convenient if leaving earlier, casual
  • Macy’s European Coffeehouse – closer to Flagstaff, good for a hearty breakfast before hitting the Grand Canyon

Desert View Drive stops are excellent; prioritizing Grandview, Lipan, Moran, and Desert View Watchtower ensures you get scenic highlights. For lunch, consider the El Tovar Dining Room (if open) or pack a picnic to maximize time at the viewpoints.

Day 4 – Hot Air Balloon + Jerome + Cathedral Rock

Balloon Ride Tips:

  • It’s wise to schedule the balloon ride on Day 2 (Wednesday). This allows a buffer in case of wind delays; most companies will reschedule you to the next available morning.
  • Recommended companies:
    • Pure Air Adventures – high reviews, includes hotel pickup and champagne toast
    • Red Rock Balloon Adventures – also reputable, experienced pilots, good safety record

Jerome is about 45 minutes each way from Sedona, so the timing is doable but it’s a full morning/early afternoon commitment. If you want a more relaxed pace, you could consider skipping Jerome or visiting it after Cathedral Rock on Day 2.

Cathedral Rock hike is short but steep; doing it in late afternoon is ideal for lighting and cooler temperatures.

Day 5 – Last Morning + Drive to Phoenix

A leisurely breakfast and final stroll is perfect. Given your flight at 4:20 PM, leaving Sedona around 10:30–11:00 AM allows plenty of time to return the rental car and get through airport security comfortably.

Additional Suggestions:

  • For dinners without reservations, consider calling ahead in the morning to see if any tables opened up due to cancellations.
  • If balloon ride winds are unfavorable, be ready to swap with the Cathedral Rock hike or another flexible activity.
  • Consider Oak Creek Canyon scenic drive if you have extra time on arrival or departure day; it’s a quick, beautiful route.
  • Pack layered clothing as Sedona can be warm during the day but cooler in the mornings/evenings in April.

Overall, your itinerary is feasible for a mix of active hiking, sightseeing, and iconic experiences. Scheduling the balloon ride earlier in the trip gives flexibility, and Jerome is a fun but optional addition depending on energy and time.
