Hi,
I'm looking for opinions please. We have looked at excursions in Skagway but are thinking we'd get more out of renting a car and driving around instead. Where would be best to rent a car from for a day (based on people's experience)? Also it appears there are people renting their own cars to tourists - this is an odd practice for us so we're unsure if it's something to be trusted?
Any advice is welcome, thank you!
Renting a car in Skagway can definitely give you more flexibility compared to organized excursions, especially if you want to explore beyond the main tourist areas and move at your own pace. Most visitors who rent a car do so for a day to explore the surrounding areas such as Dyea, the Chilkat Pass, or drive partway along the Klondike Highway.
The safest and most reliable option is to rent from an established car rental agency rather than private individuals. In Skagway, your choices are somewhat limited, but there are a few well-known companies with good reputations that cater to cruise ship passengers and other tourists.
Regarding private rentals from locals, this practice does exist in Alaska, especially in small towns, but it carries more risk. Insurance coverage can be unclear, and there may be fewer guarantees about vehicle condition. If you consider this, make sure:
For a stress-free experience, especially if this is your first time in Alaska, I would recommend using one of the established rental agencies near the port. Book in advance if possible, as cars in Skagway are limited and can sell out during the cruise season. This ensures insurance coverage, reliable vehicles, and peace of mind while exploring the scenic routes around Skagway.
