Half a Day - Best Route?? :)

Hey there! I am a Flight Attendant and will be arriving at ACV at noon, renting a car and then returning to Mckinleyville for the night. I know it’s not very long but I would just like to see whatever I can! So, what do you think would be the BEST route??? Any suggestions are soooo appreciated! Thank you so much for your time! :)

With only half a day to explore Redwood National Park after arriving at ACV, you’ll want to prioritize a route that maximizes your time among the iconic towering trees without feeling rushed. Since you’ll be returning to McKinleyville for the night, it’s best to focus on a section of the park that’s relatively close to the airport and offers short, accessible trails.

Here’s a suggested route and plan for a half-day visit:

  • Drive from ACV to the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (about 45 minutes): Head north on US-101, then take the exit toward Orick. Prairie Creek is one of the most scenic and accessible areas, with plenty of iconic redwoods.
  • Stop at the Big Tree Wayside: Just off the highway, this is a quick photo opportunity to see a massive old-growth redwood without hiking.
  • Take a short hike on the Lady Bird Johnson Trail or Big Tree Loop: These are both easy loops under a mile, giving you a chance to walk among old-growth giants and see lush ferns, streams, and wildlife. Ideal for a half-day schedule.
  • Optional: Fern Canyon: If time allows, drive a few minutes to the Fern Canyon parking area. The canyon is stunning, and even a short walk along the stream is unforgettable. This can be a quick 20–30 minute walk if you’re pressed for time.

After your park visit, you can head back toward McKinleyville (about a 45–50 minute drive) to check in and relax for the evening.

Additional tips for a short visit:

  • Arrive at the park around 1–1:30 pm to maximize daylight hours.
  • Pack water, snacks, and layers—temperatures can be cooler under the forest canopy.
  • Check for parking availability, as the main trailheads can fill up quickly even on weekdays.
  • If you want a slightly longer but still easy hike, the James Irvine Trail is another beautiful option near Prairie Creek.

Overall, this route allows you to see a sample of the giant redwoods, take a memorable walk, and still get back to McKinleyville comfortably in the evening without feeling rushed.
