Hi,
We are a family of four with two teens visiting the Redwood NP in mid August coming from Ashland, OR, and will be staying there for two nights. Is lodging in Trinidad, CA better than in Crescent City? After Redwood NP, will be visiting Sonoma County then drive back home to San Fernando Valley.
What would be your recommended places to stay either in Crescent City or in Trinidad?
Thank you very much for your patience and advices!
Both Trinidad and Crescent City can serve as good bases for exploring Redwood National Park, but they offer different advantages depending on your priorities for convenience, scenery, and driving distance.
Trinidad, CA
Trinidad is a small coastal town about 20–30 minutes south of the northern Redwood groves. It offers a charming, scenic setting with ocean views and a quiet, relaxed atmosphere. Staying here provides easy access to the southern portion of Redwood National and State Parks, including places like Patrick’s Point State Park and the Lady Bird Johnson Grove. However, it is farther from the northern groves near Crescent City, so if you plan to explore those areas, expect longer drives.
Crescent City, CA
Crescent City is larger than Trinidad and located just north of the Redwood National and State Parks. It’s closer to the northern groves, Fern Canyon, and the northern coastal attractions. It has more lodging options, including larger hotels, motels, and some chain options. This makes it convenient if you plan to explore northern areas extensively or want a base with more amenities.
Additional considerations
In summary, for a family with teens who may appreciate convenience and amenities while exploring northern Redwoods, Crescent City is a practical choice. If scenic charm and a quieter coastal experience are more appealing, Trinidad is excellent, but plan your driving route carefully for northern groves.
