PCH issues

In September we are hoping to drive along the PCH all the way from Monterey through to Pismo beach and then onto San Diego.

I keep seeing various posts that this is not possible the posting is very out of date issue 33. I want to understand if this is possible I am aware it might be slower as one way signals . We don’t really want to get past Big Sur and then have to turn back . Any help from locals very much ch appreciated.

Driving the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH, also known as Highway 1) from Monterey to Pismo Beach and then down to San Diego is generally possible in September, but there are a few key considerations, especially in the Big Sur region.

Historically, portions of Highway 1 around Big Sur have been prone to closures due to landslides and road damage. In recent years, major reconstruction projects (such as the famous Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge replacement and other landslide repairs) have been completed, and most sections are now open. However, there can still be temporary delays due to maintenance or minor landslide activity.

Here’s what to consider for planning your trip:

  • Most recent updates indicate that the highway from Monterey through Big Sur to San Simeon/Pismo Beach is fully open, including previously closed spots like Post Mile 33 (or similar mile markers prone to landslides).
  • Drive carefully and be prepared for narrow, winding roads with one-lane traffic in certain spots. Traffic lights may control alternating one-way sections.
  • Allow extra time; driving the PCH is slower than the inland routes due to curves, elevation changes, and sightseeing stops.
  • Check for live road conditions from Caltrans before departure. The Caltrans QuickMap is a useful resource for checking closures and traffic updates.

Additional tips for the trip:

  • Plan fuel stops carefully, especially in Big Sur, as gas stations are limited.
  • Consider overnight stops in Carmel, Big Sur, or San Simeon if you want a more relaxed pace and time for sightseeing.
  • Pack water, snacks, and a fully charged phone or GPS device, since cell coverage can be spotty in remote areas.

In summary, your September plan to drive from Monterey to Pismo Beach along the PCH is feasible. Just allow extra time for one-way traffic controls and slow stretches, and check live conditions as you go. Beyond Pismo Beach toward San Diego, you would generally switch to US-101 or I-1, which are fully open and straightforward.
