Mono Lake

I'm in the very early stages of trip planning for 5 or 6 nights in the Yosemite area in July, August, or September. We were there many years ago and know how beautiful it is.

I'd like to visit Mono Lake. Would it be best to stay in that area for a night or two? I saw another post that said Mono Lake is best at sunrise and sunset. Is there enough to do, or would it be best to head back to Yosemite? Any recommendations for hotels in Lee Vining, June Lake, or Mammoth? I'm a little picky about hotels, and the ones in Mammoth look nicer.

Mono Lake is a stunning destination, especially at sunrise and sunset when the light casts beautiful colors on the tufa towers. If you want to fully enjoy the area without rushing, staying one night in the Mono Lake region is recommended. This allows you to catch both sunrise and sunset, and gives you time to explore the South Tufa area and nearby scenic overlooks without feeling pressed for time.

While Mono Lake itself does not require more than a half day for exploration, pairing it with nearby attractions can make an overnight stay more worthwhile. For example, you can combine your visit with:

  • Driving the June Lake Loop, which offers stunning alpine lakes, easy hikes, and great photo opportunities.
  • Exploring the small towns of Lee Vining or June Lake for casual dining, local charm, and short nature walks.
  • If staying in Mammoth Lakes, enjoy the town’s amenities, shops, and optional short hikes or gondola rides to scenic viewpoints.

Regarding accommodations, Lee Vining has a few basic motels and inns, which are convenient for Mono Lake but can feel rustic. June Lake is smaller and quieter with a few charming lodges. Mammoth Lakes offers a wider range of higher-end hotels, lodges, and condos, which can be more comfortable and convenient if you prefer nicer amenities.

  • Lee Vining: convenient for early Mono Lake sunrise, simpler accommodations.
  • June Lake: small, scenic, quiet, good for combining lakeside views and Mono Lake.
  • Mammoth Lakes: more upscale options, additional dining, and recreational activities.

For a Yosemite-centered itinerary, you could stay primarily near Yosemite Valley or Wawona, then do a day trip or overnight in the Mono Lake/June Lake/Mammoth area. This allows you to experience both Yosemite’s iconic landscapes and the unique beauty of Mono Lake without overpacking your schedule.

In summary, an overnight in the Mono Lake region is worthwhile if you want to capture sunrise and sunset and enjoy nearby lakes and scenic drives. Choose Lee Vining for convenience, June Lake for charm, or Mammoth for comfort and amenities.
