Hoover Dam - how hard is the walk to the Observation Deck ??

We will stop at the Hoover Dam on our trip from Vegas to GC. My husband has some mobility issues and we have handicap parking permits. We don't want to do a tour just look out the top and get some photos of the Dam itself and from the top of the Dam. Is it a long hike to the Observation Deck??? Can you go early?? I saw the Dam is open to the public from 5am to 9pm. Thanks!!

The walk to the Hoover Dam Observation Deck is relatively manageable compared to a full tour of the dam, but it does involve some incline. From the top of the dam roadway, there are paved walkways leading to the observation points, which offer excellent views of both the dam and the Colorado River below. With handicap parking and permits, your husband will have easier access and can minimize walking distances.

Here are some points to keep in mind regarding accessibility and timing:

  • The main observation points are accessible via a short paved path from the parking areas. While there is some uphill walking, it is not overly strenuous, and there are benches along the way for rest.
  • Handicap-accessible routes allow you to reach the observation points without needing to climb stairs. Make sure to follow the designated accessible pathways.
  • Early morning is a great time to visit, as the dam opens at 5am. You can avoid large crowds and get clearer photos with softer lighting.
  • The dam is open until 9pm, but sunset views can be very striking if you prefer evening lighting. Keep in mind the temperatures in summer can be very high midday.

If your goal is primarily photos and enjoying the view, you do not need a full tour. Simply park in the handicap spots, follow the accessible paths, and the Observation Deck is within a short, reasonable walk. Bringing water and wearing comfortable shoes will make the experience easier and more enjoyable.
