ANC to Soldotna

Hello All,

I need to get from ANC to Soldotna in mid-June. I have the option of shuttle OR flight. The drive looks beautiful but since I'd be on shuttle, I obviously can't make stops whenever I want.

Should I take in the scenery via shuttle or skip the 3+ hour journey and hop on a flight?

(FYI- I looked into a 1 way car rental but super $$$)

Thanks in advance for any advice : )

Traveling from Anchorage (ANC) to Soldotna offers a choice between flying or taking a shuttle, and both have their pros and cons. In mid-June, the drive is particularly scenic, following the Seward Highway and passing through some of Alaska’s most stunning landscapes, including Turnagain Arm, mountains, glaciers, and forests.

Here are considerations for each option:

  • Shuttle/Drive: The drive is roughly 3 to 4 hours without stops. You’ll see beautiful scenery, wildlife along the way, and small towns. Mid-June offers long daylight hours, so you’ll have great visibility for photos and landscapes. However, being on a shuttle means you can’t stop whenever you want, and the ride can be tiring if you’re not used to long car trips.
  • Flight: Flying is fast, usually around 40–50 minutes, and much more convenient if your priority is saving time. You miss out on the scenic drive, but you do avoid potential delays or fatigue from a 3+ hour trip.

Additional points to consider:

  • If you enjoy photography and want to experience Alaska’s landscapes up close, the shuttle is worth it despite the longer time.
  • Check the shuttle service for comfort—some offer Wi-Fi, snacks, and large windows for viewing, which can make the ride more pleasant.
  • Flights can be impacted by weather in Alaska, so it’s wise to check availability and cancellation policies. Sometimes, flying is also slightly more expensive, depending on when you book.
  • Given your note about one-way car rentals being very expensive, a shuttle can be a cost-effective alternative while still giving you some scenic exposure.

In conclusion, if your priority is experiencing Alaska’s beauty and you don’t mind a longer ride, the shuttle is highly recommended. If convenience, time, or energy conservation is more important, flying is the better option.
