Hotel Registration?

I looked for a sticky post about this, but didn't see it.

Can anyone explain how the hotel registration works in China? Does the hotel handle all of it for you?

The platform I normally use when traveling is Booking . com. Can I use any hotel on there for my trip to China?

Thanks

In China, hotel registration (known as “check-in”) has specific procedures that differ slightly from many Western countries. The hotel is required by law to register all guests with the local Public Security Bureau (PSB), and this process involves providing a valid government-issued ID.

For foreign travelers, this means you will need to present your passport at check-in. The hotel staff will typically take a copy of your passport and may ask for additional details, such as your visa or entry stamp. This is mandatory and applies to all hotels, whether you book through Booking.com, Agoda, or any other platform.

Most hotels in China handle the registration process for you, so you do not need to go to a police station yourself. Staff at reputable hotels are familiar with the procedures and will ensure your information is correctly submitted to the authorities.

Regarding online booking platforms:

  • Yes, you can use Booking.com to reserve hotels in China. Most international booking platforms work fine.
  • Ensure that the hotel is licensed for foreign guests, as some budget or local guesthouses may only accept Chinese nationals.
  • Always double-check the hotel's policies regarding passport registration and check-in times, especially for smaller or boutique properties.

Additional tips:

  • Always carry your passport with you, as some hotels may ask to see it during your stay for security checks.
  • If you plan to stay in multiple cities, each hotel will register you separately; the information is not automatically shared between hotels.
  • Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak travel seasons, to ensure availability and smooth check-in.

In summary, the hotel will handle the registration process, but you must provide your passport. Booking.com is widely usable, but verify that the hotel accepts foreign guests to avoid any issues upon arrival.
