The Getaways

The 55th annual Maui Marathon on Sunday, April 27th, 2025, is an early morning event starting at 5:00 am. The marathon both starts and finishes at the Outrigger Kaanapali Beach Hotel on the Kaanapali Parkway. Runners will follow the Kaanapali Parkway onto the Honoapiilani Highway (Highway 30), which will experience lane closures along the ocean side lane from Kaanapali through Lahaina town. For part of the course, runners will use the shoulder of the highway where traffic is reduced to a single lane in some sections.

Key points along the course include:

  • Runners turn around at Papalaua Wayside Park (also known as Thousand Peaks), located between mile markers 11 and 12.
  • Olowalu, a popular snorkeling area, is around mile marker 14; traffic may be impacted along the highway shoulder.
  • The course continues back toward Kaanapali, near mile marker 24.

Drivers and visitors should expect some disruptions on the Honoapiilani Highway on race day, particularly in the early morning hours. Road closures are expected to be lifted by approximately 9:00 am. Crossing the ocean-side shoulder to access beach parking near popular snorkeling spots like Olowalu may be difficult during the race.

Leading up to the marathon, there is a Health and Fitness Expo hosted by the Westin Kaanapali on Friday, April 25th, from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and Saturday, April 26th, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The free event will feature local vendors, wellness products, fitness gear, and Maui Marathon merchandise.

Tips for visitors during this time:

  • Expect delays on the Honoapiilani Highway (Highway 30) during the marathon morning.
  • Plan extra time if you are traveling between Kaanapali, Lahaina, or Olowalu before 9:00 am on April 27th.
  • Consider enjoying the Health and Fitness Expo for pre-marathon activities, shopping, and local vendor experiences.
  • Practice aloha and patience with runners and other drivers; the area will be busy with marathon participants and spectators.

Overall, if you are planning beach visits or snorkeling near Olowalu on the morning of the marathon, it is best to arrive early, park in advance, or plan alternate routes to avoid the restricted lanes. Post 9:00 am, traffic should return to normal, and beach access will be easier.
