Driving along 395 Eastern Sierras to fish, RV camp by water?

Heading from Santa Cruz area to Las Vegas (kids soccer unfortunately) via 395.. always wanted to visit the Eastern Sierras.

Will be in June. 30' travel trailer. I think most of what we will want to see is between Bridgeport and Bishop. Would love a campground with fishing right there, ideally a quiet one (but maybe a challenge).

To visit Mono Lake, Bodie, history and explore the lakes and views, would it work to stay in one campground the whole 7 days in this area, or 2 diff ones?

So long as the weather is not hot then we could dry camp if need be.

Bonus if there are easy bike trails from campground (but not essential) thanks!

Hi,

The Eastern Sierras along Highway 395 in California are a fantastic choice for a scenic and activity-filled summer trip, especially with a 30' travel trailer. June is generally a great time for moderate weather and good fishing, though some higher elevation spots may still have chilly nights. For your itinerary between Bridgeport and Bishop, a mix of campgrounds along lakes and rivers will give you the best experience for fishing, quiet settings, and exploring Mono Lake, Bodie, and the surrounding natural beauty.

For a week-long stay, you could either choose one base campground or split your stay between two locations. If you prefer less driving and more relaxation, picking one campground centrally located could work, but splitting your stay may reduce travel time to different sites, since Bridgeport, Mono Lake, and Bishop are spread out along 395.

Here are some top campground options that cater to fishing, have water access, and are generally quieter:

  • Bridgeport Reservoir Campgrounds (Bridgeport) – Offers several small campgrounds along the reservoir with excellent trout fishing. Sites can be quiet on weekdays, and you can access the water directly from some campsites. Some areas allow RVs up to 35', though hookups are limited.
  • Twin Lakes Campground (near Mammoth Lakes) – Nestled between Upper and Lower Twin Lakes, this campground provides fishing, scenic views, and hiking access. It’s more popular, but early reservations can secure quieter sites. Some easy bike trails run along the lakeshore.
  • June Lake Campground (June Lake Loop) – Near several alpine lakes with fishing right at the lake edges. Smaller, quieter, and excellent for families. Some sites accommodate travel trailers and give direct lake access.
  • Rock Creek Campground (near Bishop) – Located along Rock Creek, which is great for fishing and wading. The area is more shaded and can feel secluded, especially on weekdays. Easy access to trails and not far from Bishop for supplies.
  • Monache Meadows Campground (South of Bishop) – Higher elevation and less crowded. Offers peaceful surroundings, and although fishing is not directly at the campground, nearby lakes and streams are accessible with a short drive or hike.

For your plan to visit Mono Lake and Bodie, it may make sense to split your stay:

  • Stay 3–4 nights near Bridgeport/Twin Lakes for fishing and exploring the northern Eastern Sierras.
  • Move 3 nights closer to Mono Lake/Bodie (Lee Vining area) or near Bishop for easier access to the southern attractions. This also reduces daily driving and lets you enjoy each area more fully.

Other tips:

  • Reserve campgrounds as early as possible. June is a popular month, especially near lakes and Mono Lake access.
  • Most campgrounds are dry camping or have limited hookups. Bring sufficient water, and check dump stations along 395 if needed.
  • For biking, many of the campgrounds have nearby paved or dirt loops along lakes or rivers that are family-friendly. Check local trail maps for day rides.
  • Weather can vary widely in June. Be prepared for warm days but chilly mornings and evenings, especially at higher elevations.

Overall, a mix of two campgrounds will give you flexibility, reduce driving stress, and allow the kids to enjoy fishing and outdoor activities while you explore the Eastern Sierras at a relaxed pace.
