Fun beyond Denver for 1/2 day
We visit our daughter in Colorado regularly, so mountains and beautiful park are not in our list anymore. We're looking suggestions of sights/to do in about hour around Denver maybe just locals know. Twice we've been in tea factory in Boulder (I just heard about it from somewhere) and we loved it. Same about railroad in Georgetown. We haven't been yet but heard about hot spring in Idaho Spring. What else you would recommend? Thank you
If you’re looking for fun, local experiences within about an hour of Denver and want to skip the mountains and parks, there are several unique attractions and activities that locals often enjoy. Since you liked the tea factory in Boulder and the Georgetown railroad, you might enjoy similar hands-on or niche experiences.
Here are some suggestions:
- Hot Springs: Idaho Springs is a classic option. You can visit Indian Hot Springs for a soak in indoor and outdoor mineral pools. It’s relaxing and scenic without requiring extensive hiking.
- Historic Towns: Explore the charm of Golden, Colorado, just 20 minutes from Denver. You can visit the Coors Brewery for a tour, stroll along Clear Creek, or check out the Colorado Railroad Museum if you enjoy trains.
- Distilleries & Breweries: Colorado has a rich craft beverage scene. Consider a tour at Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey in Denver or nearby distilleries and breweries in Littleton or Golden. Many offer tastings and behind-the-scenes experiences.
- Art and Culture: Visit Red Rocks Trading Post or Denver Art Museum’s satellite locations. While you may have visited central museums, smaller galleries and art studios in towns like Golden or Lakewood offer local flair.
- Chocolate and Sweets: Take a short drive to local chocolatiers, like Vosges Chocolate in Denver, or explore small artisan food producers in Lafayette and Boulder if you want a tasty, half-day experience.
Other local gems within about an hour of Denver:
- Historic Mines: Check out the Argo Gold Mine and Mill in Idaho Springs for a short tour of an old gold mine.
- Farmers Markets or Specialty Shops: Towns like Louisville, Lafayette, and Golden often have weekend markets, local craft shops, and small eateries that give a taste of the community.
- Unique Experiences: Try hot air balloon rides near Boulder or glassblowing studios in Golden or Denver suburbs for something hands-on and memorable.
In summary, for a half-day excursion without mountains or parks, consider hot springs, historic towns, craft beverage tours, small artisan experiences, or interactive activities like chocolate making or glassblowing. Golden and Idaho Springs are particularly convenient and full of options, making them ideal for a short getaway from Denver.
