Waimoku Falls hike - Late Afternoon

Based on our itinerary, we'll be getting to this area mid/late afternoon on memorial day. A couple questions...

-I've heard parking is limited. What are our options if the lots are full?

-Lot closes at 5:00. But I assume as long as we get in before then we're good?

Thanks!

The Waimoku Falls hike via the Pipiwai Trail in Haleakalā National Park is a beautiful experience, but Memorial Day weekend can get busy, especially in the late afternoon.

Regarding parking:

  • The main trailhead parking lot at Haleakalā National Park (near Kipahulu) is relatively small and fills up quickly, particularly on holidays.
  • If the lot is full, your main alternatives are to check for street parking along the access road, but this is limited and may not be permitted in all areas. Sometimes, visitors park at nearby accommodations or along the highway and arrange a short shuttle or taxi if available.
  • Arriving a bit earlier is the best way to guarantee a spot. Even 30–60 minutes can make a difference on busy days.

Regarding the lot closing:

  • The 5:00 PM closing refers to the gate; as long as you are inside the park before the gate closes, you can usually remain in the lot until you finish your hike.
  • Keep in mind that the trail is approximately 4 miles round trip and may take 2–3 hours depending on pace, so if you arrive very late, you might be hiking in diminishing light. Bring a flashlight or headlamp just in case.

Other tips for a late afternoon hike:

  • Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, as even in the late afternoon it can be warm and humid.
  • Consider starting from the trail earlier if you want to fully enjoy Waimoku Falls and the bamboo forest without rushing.
  • Check the weather; the trail can be slippery after rain.

In summary, getting to the parking lot before 5:00 PM is key, and if the lot is full, options are limited, so arriving earlier or being flexible is your safest bet. Enjoy the stunning falls!
