Traffic Considerations

Are there any specific traffic considerations we need to be aware of? Specifically...

-Between West Maui and the airport

-Between Kaanapali/Black Rock and Lahina

Traveling the road to Hana, if we leave our hotel at 6:30am, it's my understanding we should be in good shape?

Here’s a detailed overview of traffic considerations for Maui based on your itinerary:

1. Between West Maui and the Airport (Kahului):

  • Traffic on Honoapiilani Highway (Hwy 30) from Kaanapali/West Maui toward the airport can be heavy during peak morning and afternoon hours, especially around Lahaina town and the outskirts of Kahului.
  • Weekdays tend to have more commuter traffic, whereas weekends can be busy with tourists heading to beaches and attractions.
  • Allow extra time for possible slowdowns near Kapalua and through Lahaina; it’s generally safe to budget 1–1.5 hours from Kaanapali to Kahului Airport in normal traffic.

2. Between Kaanapali/Black Rock and Lahaina:

  • This stretch is relatively short, about 4–5 miles, but can experience congestion during peak tourist times, lunchtime, or special events in Lahaina.
  • Parking in Lahaina town can be limited, so plan accordingly if you intend to stop. Early morning or later afternoon usually avoids the worst traffic.
  • Take care when crossing intersections or turning onto Front Street, as pedestrian activity can slow traffic.

3. Road to Hana departure considerations:

  • Leaving your hotel around 6:30am is generally a very good strategy. You will likely avoid most traffic in Paia and along the main highway.
  • Arriving early also gives you better parking options at popular stops such as Twin Falls, Waiʻānapanapa State Park, and the Pipiwai Trail.
  • Keep in mind that some sections of the Road to Hana are narrow, winding, and may require cautious driving, particularly the bridges and one-lane sections.

Tip: Maui traffic is generally predictable if you plan around peak hours. Using a navigation app in real time can help avoid unexpected slowdowns, and leaving early for both Lahaina trips and the Road to Hana will make your day much smoother.
