SIM card at Kunming Airport

Hello,

Is there a booth that sells SIM card at Kunming airport ?

I know about esim option but last time I tried it in Taiwan for my pixel 6a didn't work that great. It eventually worked after numerous emails exchange with Airalo support team.

Yes, Kunming Changshui International Airport has booths and counters where travelers can purchase local SIM cards upon arrival. These are generally located in the arrivals hall of the international terminal, making it convenient for visitors to get connected right after landing.

Here are some details and options to consider:

  • Mobile Operators: The main Chinese carriers—China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom—usually have counters at the airport. Each offers prepaid SIM cards suitable for short-term visitors.
  • Types of SIM Cards: You can purchase SIM cards with data only or with both data and local call/SMS functionality. Most travelers opt for data packages since apps like WeChat, Google Maps, and WhatsApp can handle communication.
  • Requirements: Chinese regulations require that all SIM cards be registered with a passport. Be ready to present your passport at the counter for registration.

Additional tips:

  • Prices vary depending on the amount of data and validity period, but typical tourist SIM cards offer 5–10 GB for 7–15 days.
  • Airport counters often accept cash (RMB) and sometimes credit cards.
  • Check the compatibility of your phone before purchasing, especially if it is an unlocked device and supports the Chinese frequency bands.
  • If you prefer, there are also SIM vending machines in some parts of the airport, though staff assistance can help avoid configuration issues.

For those who prefer eSIM, while it is a convenient option, experiences may vary depending on the phone model and local carrier support. Based on your past experience, a physical SIM card purchased at the airport is likely to be more reliable for immediate connectivity in Kunming.
