If you had to pick one, which one would you choose?
For context, we live in the Pacific Northwest of the US, where the cascade mountains have gorgeous snowy peaks and colorful lakes that might resemble jiuzhaigou maybe just slightly. So I'm wondering if huangshan might provide a slightly more novel experience for us. Otoh, my kids (12 and 8yo) are very whiny when they hike, and there seems to be less space for the crowd to spread out on huangshan (correct me if I'm wrong).
Thank you for any feedback!
Choosing between Jiuzhaigou/Huanglong and Huangshan really depends on the type of experience you want and the age/energy level of your kids.
If you are used to the Cascade Mountains and enjoy snowy peaks with colorful lakes, Jiuzhaigou/Huanglong may feel somewhat familiar, but its landscapes are spectacular and unique in China. Jiuzhaigou is famous for its multi-colored lakes, waterfalls, and relatively gentle walking paths. Huanglong has stunning mineral terraces and beautiful scenic walks, but is less visited than Jiuzhaigou and offers a quieter experience.
Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), on the other hand, provides a very different experience. Its granite peaks, “sea of clouds,” and iconic pine trees are visually striking and have inspired Chinese art for centuries. The trails can be steep and crowded, with narrow staircases in places. This may make it challenging with young children who tire easily or dislike long hikes. However, cable cars on Huangshan make it possible to see many highlights without strenuous hiking.
For a family with 8–12-year-olds who may complain during hikes, Jiuzhaigou/Huanglong is generally easier to navigate and more kid-friendly. You can enjoy stunning scenery without stressing over long uphill climbs or crowded narrow trails.
In summary, for a family-oriented, low-stress experience, Jiuzhaigou/Huanglong is likely the better choice. For a more iconic, dramatic mountain experience with some hiking effort, Huangshan would be ideal.
