6 nights, need hotel near metro and advice for excursions

Hi everyone,

Going to be in Shanghai for 6 nights in August. We've been before therefore looking at trips out of the city to maybe Hangzhou. We also want to visit Disnelyland, therefore want to be close to the metro so we can move around quickly.

Can anyone recommend a good hotel that will allow us to get out of town conveniently on the train?

I have seen the Grand Central Hotel Shanghai

thanks

For a 6-night stay in Shanghai with plans to explore both the city and nearby destinations like Hangzhou and Disneyland, staying near a metro station is highly recommended. This ensures easy access to Shanghai’s extensive metro network, high-speed train stations, and other transport hubs.

Regarding your hotel choice, the Grand Central Hotel Shanghai is located near People's Square, which is a very convenient area for metro access. People’s Square Station connects multiple lines (Lines 1, 2, and 8), making it simple to reach major attractions, business districts, and railway stations. From here, you can easily access Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station for high-speed trains to Hangzhou, which takes about 1 hour.

Alternative hotel options near metro stations for convenience:

  • JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai at Tomorrow Square: Near People’s Square and metro access, close to the Bund and shopping areas.
  • Radisson Blu Hotel Shanghai New World: Walking distance to People’s Square Station, convenient for city exploration and train trips.
  • SSAW Boutique Hotel Shanghai Bund: Closer to the Bund, also near metro stations for easy city travel.

For Disneyland:

  • Shanghai Disney Resort is best accessed via Metro Line 11. Staying near a line that connects to Line 11 will reduce travel time. For example, hotels near Century Park (Line 2) allow a simple transfer to Line 11 at Luoshan Road Station.

For excursions outside the city, such as Hangzhou:

  • Take the high-speed train from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, which is accessible via Metro Line 2 from central areas like People’s Square or Jing’an. The journey to Hangzhou is about 55–60 minutes.
  • If you plan to visit water towns like Zhujiajiao or Tongli, you can take Metro Line 17 to Zhujiajiao Station or take a short taxi from central Shanghai. These are convenient day trips.

Additional tips:

  • Book train tickets to Hangzhou in advance, especially in August, which is busy summer travel season.
  • Check hotel shuttle services if available, particularly for trips to the train stations or Disney Resort, as this can save time with luggage and transfers.
  • Staying in central areas like People’s Square, Jing’an, or Lujiazui provides the best combination of city exploration, metro access, and convenience for excursions.

Overall, the Grand Central Hotel Shanghai is a good choice for your plans, offering both metro convenience and proximity to key attractions. Other hotels near People’s Square or metro transfer points can also serve your needs for both city touring and day trips.
