Fort Zachary Taylor Park

Looking for a beach day instead of lounging by the pool and have never been here. Worth it? Looks pretty nice and it seems like a strait run down Angela where we will be staying.

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for a beach day in Key West. It’s one of the island’s best beaches for both swimming and snorkeling, and it’s less commercialized than the more crowded spots near Duval Street. The park has a historic fort, so you get a bit of history along with your beach time.

Here are some highlights and considerations:

  • The beach itself has clear water and some natural shade from trees, which is nice if you want to escape the sun for a bit. It’s excellent for families and casual swimmers.
  • Snorkeling is great here; the rocky areas around the park are home to lots of fish and small reef formations. Bring your own mask and snorkel to explore.
  • Facilities include picnic areas, restrooms, and a small snack bar, so you don’t have to worry about bringing everything with you.
  • Parking is available inside the park, but it can fill up quickly on weekends and holidays. Getting there early is recommended.
  • There’s a modest entrance fee per car, which helps maintain the park.

In terms of logistics from Angela Street, the park is very accessible. It’s a straight run, roughly 2–3 miles depending on the exact location, so you can easily bike, drive, or take a short ride via rideshare. Unlike some of the downtown beaches, Fort Zach offers a quieter, more natural vibe, which is great if you want a break from the busier areas.

Overall, if your goal is a relaxed beach day with swimming, some snorkeling, and a touch of history, Fort Zachary Taylor Park is a solid choice. Just plan to arrive early, especially if you’re going during peak tourist season or weekends, to ensure a good spot.
