Travelling to China in October or November

Hello - we are looking to travel to China - Shanghai, Xian and Beijing - under the Transit without Visa scheme. Because of work our options are:

Option 1: Travelling in October - we would be looking to arrive right after the National Day holiday. Would arriving in Shanghai on 8th October be busy, or best to arrive on the 9th October instead?

Option 2: Travelling in November - it would be 2nd half of November

Can you let me know your thoughts on what option would be best? Thinking about the weather and how busy it will be during these dates.

Thanks in advance!

When planning a trip to China under the Transit Without Visa (TWOV) scheme for Shanghai, Xi’an, and Beijing, timing can impact both crowd levels and weather.

Regarding your two options:

  • Option 1 – Early October (after National Day, 8th or 9th October):

The National Day holiday (Golden Week) is from 1st to 7th October. During this period, airports, high-speed trains, and tourist attractions are extremely busy, with large domestic travel flows. Arriving on 8th October, immediately after the holiday, could still be hectic as some travelers extend their holidays or return later than the official end date. 9th October would be slightly better, as the post-holiday rush begins to ease, but airport and train congestion may still linger.

Weather-wise, October is generally very comfortable in China:

  • Shanghai: mild temperatures, low humidity, clear skies.
  • Beijing: cool, dry, pleasant for sightseeing.
  • Xi’an: moderate temperatures, good for outdoor exploration.
  • Option 2 – November (second half):

By mid to late November, crowds are significantly lower, and tourist sites are much less busy. This is ideal for visiting major attractions without large crowds. Weather starts to cool:

  • Shanghai: cooler, some foggy days, comfortable layering needed.
  • Beijing: cold, can drop near freezing, especially in the mornings and evenings.
  • Xi’an: cooler but generally dry; a jacket or coat is necessary.

Other considerations:

  • Airfare and hotel prices may be slightly higher immediately after Golden Week (early October) due to residual demand.
  • November is generally cheaper and easier for booking, with less chance of delays at airports or attractions.

Recommendation: If you prefer milder weather and don’t mind some crowds, early October (preferably 9th) is fine. If you want fewer crowds, more relaxed travel, and are prepared for cooler weather, the second half of November is preferable.
