Which snorkel boat (if any) goes to Honolua Bay?

We are visiting Maui in September and would like to go on a snorkeling day trip to Honolua Bay. I can’t seem to find any boats that go there. A few years ago we went on the Teralani but the captain took us south instead of going north to Honolua because of snorkeling conditions that day.

Honolua Bay is one of Maui’s most pristine snorkeling spots, but there are no commercial snorkeling boats that *regularly* depart specifically for Honolua Bay. The bay is part of a Marine Life Conservation District, and access is often dependent on ocean conditions, season, and permits. Many tour operators avoid it when the surf is rough to protect the reef and ensure guest safety.

Most snorkeling day trips along Maui’s northwest coast will plan to go toward the general Lahaina/Molokai area or south to Olowalu, Kapalua, or Molokini Crater. Captains sometimes alter their route depending on weather, visibility, and ocean conditions. As you experienced with the Teralani, even if a tour advertises flexibility, the captain may change the destination for safety reasons.

If your goal is to snorkel Honolua Bay, here are some options and considerations:

  • Drive and snorkel yourself: You can access Honolua Bay from the shore via the Honolua Bay Trail or Mokuleia Bay Trail (parking is limited), which gives you control over timing and conditions.
  • Private charter: Some private boat companies based in Lahaina or Kapalua may offer custom trips to Honolua Bay. You’d need to specify your destination when booking, but availability depends on ocean conditions.
  • Tour operator flexibility: Some Maui snorkel companies advertise “North Shore snorkel trips” and may go to Honolua if conditions allow. Always confirm with the operator in advance, and understand they may change plans if surf is high.
  • Seasonal conditions: Honolua Bay is best in summer months (May–October) when the northwestern swell is smaller and waters are calmer. Winter months have large surf, making snorkel trips unsafe.

Recommendations:

  • Contact private charter operators in Lahaina or Napili directly to see if they can run a trip specifically to Honolua Bay during your visit.
  • Consider going on your own if you have a rental car and snorkeling gear; shore entry is legal and provides flexibility.
  • Check local surf and weather reports daily — the captain may change destinations even if you book Honolua Bay.

In summary, while there isn’t a regular commercial boat that guarantees Honolua Bay, private charters or shore snorkeling are the best ways to experience it, and always expect potential changes due to safety and ocean conditions.
