Sequoia National Park

We are driving to Sequoia National Park from LA area, after spending a few days in San Diego for a wedding - is there anything we should do, visit on the drive up? We are staying at Wuksachi Lodge for three nights in the park. Trip is early July. Thanks, Karen

Driving from the Los Angeles area to Sequoia National Park offers a variety of interesting stops and scenic routes, especially if you have a few days after San Diego. Since you’ll be staying at Wuksachi Lodge for three nights in early July, it’s a good idea to pace your drive, take breaks at scenic spots, and perhaps explore a few small towns or attractions along the way.

Suggested stops and routes on the drive:

  • Cabazon Dinosaurs & Desert Outlets – If you’re heading north through I-10, this roadside stop is quirky and fun for quick photos. The outlets nearby also offer a shopping break if desired.
  • Lake Isabella / Kern River area – Located along Highway 178, this area offers beautiful river views and a chance for a short picnic or walk. It’s a nice midpoint before entering the higher elevations of the park.
  • Bakersfield – A good city to refuel, grab a meal, or take a short break. It’s also convenient if you want to adjust your route to visit Sequoia via Highway 65 or Highway 198.
  • Lancaster / Mojave Desert detour – For a desert scenery option, Highway 14 through the Antelope Valley provides a stark, beautiful landscape. You can see the transition from desert to the Sierra Nevada foothills.
  • Three Rivers – Just outside Sequoia National Park’s southern entrance. A charming small town where you can stock up on supplies, grab coffee, or enjoy a quick bite before heading into the park.

Driving tips:

  • Allow extra travel time. Mountain roads in Sequoia can be steep and winding, especially as you approach Wuksachi Lodge. Even if GPS shows a shorter duration, plan for slower speeds in the park.
  • Fill up on gas before entering the park. Gas stations inside Sequoia are limited and expensive.
  • Bring water, snacks, and perhaps a cooler if you plan to picnic along the way.

Inside Sequoia National Park:

  • Visit the Giant Forest to see the General Sherman Tree, the world’s largest tree by volume.
  • Take short hikes around Moro Rock for panoramic views and Crescent Meadow for a peaceful stroll.
  • Consider the Drive to Lodgepole or the Mineral King area for additional scenery, but be aware Mineral King is about an hour from Wuksachi and requires a winding drive.

Early July is a popular time, so starting your days early will help you avoid crowds and make the most of your three-night stay. By planning a few stops en route from LA or San Diego, you can break up the drive and enjoy California’s diverse landscapes before immersing yourself in the giant sequoias.
