Route to Ojai

We are traveling south on 101 towards the end of October and have thought of overnighting in Ojai...we have never been. One way is using 150 which appears to be a curvy rural road and another is 33 from Ventura. I am a senior driver and this would be in daylight. What are the pros and cons of either route. I gather 150 might be more scenic, but not a high priority. Rest stops are a high priority.

Traveling from Highway 101 to Ojai offers a couple of main options: Highway 150 and Highway 33. Both routes have their own characteristics, and considering your priority as a senior driver looking for safer roads and convenient rest stops, here is a detailed breakdown.

Highway 150 (Ventura/Ojai Road):

  • Road Characteristics: Highway 150 is a curvy, two-lane rural road that climbs into the hills. While it is paved and maintained, there are multiple sharp turns and elevation changes, which may require careful attention when driving.
  • Scenery: It is more scenic, with views of the Ventura River Valley, orchards, and rolling hills. If you enjoy natural landscapes, this route is visually appealing.
  • Rest Stops and Amenities: Limited along the route. There are few small pullouts or local gas stations in Ojai Valley before reaching the town. No major rest stops along the way.
  • Pros: Scenic, direct route to Ojai, less traffic than Highway 33.
  • Cons: Narrow, winding, potentially challenging if you prefer less-curvy roads; fewer places to stop safely.

Highway 33 (from Ventura):

  • Road Characteristics: Highway 33 is longer and follows a more gradual incline along the east side of the Ventura River. While it also has curves, it is generally considered easier and less steep than 150 in terms of driving difficulty.
  • Scenery: Less dramatic than 150, but you still pass through farmland, oak-studded hills, and distant mountain views.
  • Rest Stops and Amenities: Slightly better, as the highway passes through small communities where you can find gas stations and convenience stores. More opportunities to safely pull over.
  • Pros: Easier drive, gentler curves, more rest options along the way, safer for senior drivers.
  • Cons: Less direct, slightly longer in terms of miles, scenery not as striking as 150.

Additional tips:

  • Since you are driving in daylight, visibility is good, which reduces the challenge of winding roads.
  • Plan a brief stop in Ventura before turning onto either route to use restroom facilities and stretch.
  • If comfort and safety are the main priorities, Highway 33 is likely the better option, even if it sacrifices some scenic views.

In summary, for a senior driver prioritizing rest stops and ease of driving, Highway 33 is the recommended route. Highway 150 is more scenic but involves sharper curves and limited stopping points, so it is better suited for those comfortable with winding rural roads.
