Lassen in June
I currently have two nights planned for my family of 5 at Lassen (Butte Lake) June 24 & 25, before heading to Crater Lake. I didn’t realize when I booked that Bumpass Hell would likely be closed and the main road, too. Should I make alternative plans? Is it still a worthwhile destination? We’re coming from Yosemite and heading to Crater lake after. Thank you!
Lassen Volcanic National Park in late June is still a beautiful destination, but snowpack can keep some areas, including Bumpass Hell and sections of the main park road, closed. That said, the park is still very worthwhile for a family trip, especially if you adjust your expectations and focus on areas that are accessible.
Here are some considerations for your visit:
- Road Access: Main roads, like the one leading to Bumpass Hell, often remain closed until late June or early July, depending on snow levels. Butte Lake and nearby campgrounds should be accessible, making it a good base for your stay.
- Alternative Hikes & Activities:
- Manzanita Lake area – short trails, beautiful lake views, and easy hikes suitable for families.
- Lassen Peak Trail – check if the trailhead is open; even a partial hike gives dramatic views of the volcano.
- Sulphur Works – accessible geothermal area with fumaroles and bubbling mud pots; great for kids and only a short walk from the parking lot.
- Walk around Butte Lake itself – easy trails, kayaking or canoeing if permitted, and wildlife viewing opportunities.
- Timing & Logistics: Coming from Yosemite, a direct drive will be long (8–9 hours), so plan for rest stops or a split drive. Leaving enough time to enjoy the park without rushing is key, especially with kids.
- Scenic Drive to Crater Lake: Even with some areas closed, Lassen offers beautiful scenery for your route north to Crater Lake, including volcanic landscapes, forests, and lakes.
In summary, while Bumpass Hell might be closed, Lassen is still a fantastic destination for a June visit. Focus on accessible areas like Butte Lake, Manzanita Lake, Sulphur Works, and any open trails. Your family can still enjoy volcanic landscapes, geothermal features, and outdoor adventures without needing to reschedule the trip.
