Senior pass and camping

Hi so we are making our way out there in October for a night at Mather campground. Planning on buying a senior national parks pass. I know that if we are going to go in the fall we need to book a campsite asap. But since we are not planning on buying the pass until we get there is there a way to get a refund for the senior pass discount on our campsite? Or a way to book it now with the discount? Thanks.

Visiting the Grand Canyon in October is a great time—fewer crowds and cooler weather. Regarding the Senior Pass and Mather Campground, here’s what you need to know.

The Senior Pass (for U.S. citizens or permanent residents age 62+) costs $80 and provides lifetime access to all federal recreation sites, including discounts on camping fees at National Park campgrounds like Mather.

Booking your campsite with the senior discount

  • Most reservations for Mather Campground are done through Recreation.gov. When you book, the system applies the full camping fee.
  • The senior discount cannot be applied online unless you already have a Senior Pass number. Recreation.gov only allows the discount to be applied after purchase if you provide your pass number at the time of booking.
  • Since you don’t plan to buy the pass until arrival, you won’t be able to enter your pass number now, so the online reservation will be charged at the full rate.

Getting a refund for the senior discount

  • If you book your site now without the pass, the National Park Service does not automatically issue a retroactive refund after you purchase the Senior Pass.
  • However, you can try contacting the campground or Recreation.gov customer service after purchasing the pass—they may adjust the fee in some cases, but it is not guaranteed and is handled on a case-by-case basis.
  • The safest way to ensure the discount is to buy your Senior Pass first, either online or at a park entrance, then use that pass number to make your campsite reservation.

Recommendations

  • Purchase the Senior Pass online in advance. This way, you have the pass number ready to book your campsite immediately and secure the senior discount.
  • Alternatively, if you cannot purchase online, plan to buy the Senior Pass at the Grand Canyon entrance or visitor center the day you arrive, then make a same-day or next-day reservation for Mather Campground if availability allows.
  • In October, while crowds are lower, Mather Campground can still fill up, so securing your site as soon as possible is highly recommended.

In summary, for guaranteed senior discount on Mather Campground, the best approach is to get your Senior Pass before booking. Retroactive discounts after booking without the pass are uncertain.
