1 Day at GC 10/01/25

Hi,

We are driving from Antelope Canyon (already booked a tour) to GC on 9/30/25 after our tour at Antelope Canyon ends at 3:45. Staying a Maswik Lodge. We only have 10/01/25 to explore the GC then driving to Sedona.

Will it still be hot?

We are both mid 50s and active- what are the must do trails?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Lisa

Visiting the Grand Canyon on October 1st is a great time. The South Rim, where Maswik Lodge is located, will generally have mild and comfortable temperatures during the day, ranging from the mid-60s to low 70s °F (18–22°C). Mornings and evenings can be cooler, sometimes dipping into the 40s–50s °F (5–15°C), so layering is recommended. It won’t be hot like summer months, but the sun can still be strong, so sunscreen and a hat are useful.

Since you only have one full day to explore, it’s best to focus on the South Rim’s scenic viewpoints and some manageable hikes. The shuttle system at the park can help you reach viewpoints without excessive walking on roads. Given that you are both active, here are suggested trails and activities:

  • Rim Trail: A mostly flat trail running along the South Rim from the South Kaibab Trailhead to Hermit’s Rest. You can do short segments to enjoy spectacular canyon views without strenuous effort.
  • South Kaibab Trail: Excellent for a shorter hike down into the canyon. You don’t need to go all the way to the river; Ooh Aah Point or Cedar Ridge are popular turnaround points for moderate hiking with rewarding views.
  • Bright Angel Trail: Well-maintained and has rest houses along the way. Hiking a few miles down and returning is doable in a day and provides a true canyon experience. Be mindful of the return climb—it’s steeper than the downhill.
  • Desert View Drive: If you prefer driving, stopping at viewpoints along this scenic drive gives panoramic views and photo opportunities. The Desert View Watchtower is worth a stop.
  • Sunrise or Sunset at Yavapai Point or Hopi Point: These are fantastic spots for photography and simply soaking in the vastness of the canyon.

Tips for maximizing your day:

  • Start early to enjoy cooler morning temperatures and avoid midday crowds.
  • Bring water, snacks, and layers for warmth in the morning/evening.
  • Use the park shuttle system to move efficiently between major viewpoints.
  • Don’t attempt long hikes into the canyon if you want to return to Maswik Lodge the same day—short hikes are enough to experience the canyon’s grandeur.

After your day at the canyon, you’ll have time to drive to Sedona. Leaving mid-to-late afternoon gives you a scenic route along the way and avoids rushing.

In summary, focus on South Rim viewpoints, take one or two shorter hikes like South Kaibab to Ooh Aah Point or a segment of Bright Angel Trail, enjoy the shuttle for scenic stops, and layer your clothing for the mild October temperatures. This approach allows you to experience the Grand Canyon fully in a single day without overexerting yourselves.
