Snorkeling Recommendations - 3 Adults, First-Timers, Late J

Hi all,

We’re three adults staying at the Wailea Beach Marriott from June 24–29 and looking to book a 5-hour snorkeling tour, ideally to Molokini Crater. Two of us are complete beginners, so we’re hoping for a safe, relaxed, and visually rewarding experience.

We were originally hoping to go with Trilogy, but they’re booked for our dates (we realize we’re a bit late 😅). We’re now looking into Four Winds and Redline Rafting—but would love feedback from anyone who has done both or can help us understand how the experiences compare.

A few things we’re considering:

• We’re drawn to Molokini for its beauty and water clarity, but open to alternatives if there’s a better experience for first-time snorkelers.

Any other operators we should consider? Is SNUBA worth it for first-timers? Appreciate any tips or tour reviews!

Mahalo in advance! 🌺

Aloha! Since you’re staying in Wailea and are first-time snorkelers, you’re in a great spot for easy access to some of Maui’s best snorkeling tours. Molokini Crater is a top choice due to its incredible water clarity, abundant fish, and unique volcanic landscape. Here’s a breakdown to help you choose among operators and options.

Four Winds and Redline Rafting both offer excellent experiences, but they differ in style and group size:

  • Four Winds: Typically a larger boat experience with more amenities and comfort. Great for beginners because they provide guided instruction, ample safety briefing, and sometimes multiple stops, including Turtle Town (a shallow area with Hawaiian green sea turtles). Larger boats may feel less intimate but offer stability, shaded areas, and onboard bathrooms.
  • Redline Rafting: Smaller raft tours with a more personal and adventurous feel. These often take you to Molokini and nearby snorkeling spots. The guides are hands-on and very attentive to beginners, making sure you’re comfortable and safe. Smaller rafts mean a closer connection to the water and wildlife, but less space and minimal shade.

Other operators to consider:

  • Ultimate Snorkel & Scuba Tours: Known for beginner-friendly Molokini tours with small groups and attentive guides.
  • Snorkel Bob’s Maui: Offers both Molokini and Turtle Town tours. Good for those who want a relaxed pace and beginner instruction.
  • Pacific Whale Foundation: Eco-friendly operator with guided snorkeling trips to Molokini and the coastline. Focuses on conservation and education, which can make the experience more enriching.

First-timer tips:

  • Molokini is ideal because it has calm waters inside the crater, perfect for beginners.
  • If anyone in your group is nervous about snorkeling, inflatable vests or a guided “buddy system” can help with confidence.
  • Morning tours usually have calmer seas and better visibility.
  • Consider adding a short stop at Turtle Town for shallow water snorkeling if you want easier conditions and guaranteed sightings of sea turtles.

About SNUBA: It can be a fun alternative for beginners, letting you breathe underwater without heavy scuba gear. However, it’s more expensive, and the Molokini experience is often better with traditional guided snorkeling. For three adults with limited experience, regular snorkeling on a guided tour is usually safer, less complicated, and more enjoyable.

Summary: If you value comfort, amenities, and a classic Molokini experience, Four Winds is great. If you prefer a small-group, adventure-focused, personalized tour, Redline Rafting is excellent. Other options like Snorkel Bob’s or Pacific Whale Foundation can also be considered depending on your preferred pace and tour style. Morning departures are highly recommended for calm seas and best visibility.
