Skagway to Emerald Lake and beyond
Our cruise ship will dock at Skagway for 11 hours from 7:00 am - 8:00 pm. We are thinking of renting a car and driving to Emerald Lake. After Emerald Lake, is it worth driving, and time-wise possible to drive, to Whitehorse on Hwy 2, or Tagish on Hwy 8? If we stop at Emerald Lake and come back to Skagway, what are the top places to visit here?
Thank you!
With an 11-hour cruise stop in Skagway, you have a limited window to explore outside the town. Driving to Emerald Lake is doable, but attempting to reach Whitehorse or Tagish will be very tight and potentially unsafe due to distance and road conditions, especially if you want to enjoy sightseeing along the way.
Driving Distances and Timing:
- Skagway to Emerald Lake (via Klondike Highway/Hwy 2): ~2.5–3 hours one way, including brief stops for photos. Emerald Lake is just inside British Columbia, Canada.
- Emerald Lake to Whitehorse: ~3–3.5 hours one way from Emerald Lake, making a round trip impossible within your 11-hour window if you include time to explore Skagway and Emerald Lake.
- Emerald Lake to Tagish (via Hwy 8): ~2.5–3 hours one way, still very tight for a same-day return.
Recommendation:
Focus on a manageable excursion to Emerald Lake, allowing time to enjoy the scenery, take photos, and possibly a short walk. This will give you a taste of the Yukon landscape without rushing or risking missing your ship departure.
Top Places to Visit in Skagway if Returning After Emerald Lake:
- Main Street: Historic downtown with preserved Gold Rush-era buildings, shops, and museums.
- Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park: Offers exhibits, walking tours, and ranger-led programs about the Gold Rush history.
- White Pass & Yukon Route Railway: Even if you don’t ride the full train, the Skagway depot and nearby views are worth seeing.
- Lower Reid Falls: A short scenic walk just outside town, easy to fit into a few hours.
- Local shops and cafes: If time allows, enjoy souvenirs or a meal before returning to the cruise ship.
Tips for Timing and Safety:
- Account for border crossing delays when entering Canada, as Emerald Lake is in BC. You’ll need passports and potentially some time for customs checks.
- Plan at least 1–1.5 hours buffer to return to Skagway well before your ship departs.
- Driving distances in Alaska/Yukon can be deceptive; roads may be narrow and winding, so allow extra time.
In summary, a same-day drive to Emerald Lake is feasible and rewarding. Driving further to Whitehorse or Tagish is not practical given your 11-hour window. Once back in Skagway, focus on downtown, historical sites, and short scenic walks to make the most of your port day.
