Is city view the same as Pudong view?

We would really love to book a hotel room with a view of the Pudong skyline. Lots of the hotels on the Bund offer city views....is that a view of Pudong? Any recommendations for hotels ( doesn't have to be 5 star!) Many thanks, A

In Shanghai, hotels on the Bund can offer different types of views, and “city view” does not necessarily mean a clear view of the Pudong skyline. The Bund faces east across the Huangpu River toward Pudong, so rooms specifically labeled as “river view” or “Pudong view” will give you the iconic skyline with the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, and Jin Mao Tower. A generic “city view” may instead face inland toward Puxi, showing streets, older buildings, or the Bund itself, and might not give you the skyline you’re hoping for.

When booking a hotel, make sure to check the room description carefully and, if possible, contact the hotel to confirm that the room has a direct view of Pudong across the river.

Here are some hotel recommendations with Pudong views that are not necessarily 5-star luxury but offer great skyline experiences:

  • Les Suites Orient, Bund Shanghai: Offers rooms with panoramic river views of Pudong. Comfortable and centrally located, excellent for first-time visitors.
  • JJ Boutique Hotel (The Bund): Smaller boutique hotel with some rooms offering direct Pudong views. Cozy and quieter than larger hotels.
  • Astor House Hotel: Historic hotel on the Bund with some river-facing rooms giving partial views of Pudong’s skyline. A more classic Shanghai experience.
  • Shanghai Bund New Asia Hotel: Mid-range option, select river view rooms for clear Pudong skyline vistas.

Tips for booking:

  • Always request a “river view” or “Pudong view” room rather than assuming “city view” will face the skyline.
  • Higher floors generally offer better, unobstructed views.
  • Booking directly with the hotel or via platforms that allow you to specify the view can help ensure you get the desired room.

Staying on the Bund is ideal for first-timers wanting the classic Shanghai skyline, and with careful selection, you can enjoy a spectacular Pudong view without needing a 5-star budget.
