Joshua Tree/ Palm Springs
We are planning a trip to CA from mid to late September, spending 2-3 days in Joshua Tree National Park and then going to Palm Springs for 2-3 days. I'm wondering what the weather will be like that time of year. I'm also trying to figure out where to stay. Would 29 Palms or Yucca Valley be good choices to stay near the park? Should we stay in Palm Springs itself? Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Visiting Joshua Tree and Palm Springs in mid to late September is a great choice. The weather in Joshua Tree during this period typically ranges from highs around 85–95°F (29–35°C) during the day to cooler evenings around 60–65°F (15–18°C). Humidity is low, and it’s mostly dry, but be prepared for cooler nights, especially if you plan to stargaze. In Palm Springs, temperatures can be slightly warmer, with highs around 95–100°F (35–38°C) and mild evenings.
Where to Stay Near Joshua Tree National Park:
- Joshua Tree / Twentynine Palms Area: Staying in Twentynine Palms is convenient for early park access, especially if you plan to explore the northern and central areas of the park. Accommodations include small hotels, motels, and vacation rentals.
- Yucca Valley: Slightly larger and more commercial than Twentynine Palms, offering more restaurants, grocery stores, and services. It’s still a short drive to the park entrances (typically 10–15 minutes).
- Joshua Tree Village: Closer to the western entrances of the park, with boutique lodgings, inns, and unique Airbnb options. Great for an artsy, local vibe.
Where to Stay in Palm Springs:
- Palm Springs Downtown: Ideal for easy access to restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. Walking distance to galleries, coffee shops, and entertainment.
- Greater Palm Springs Area: Includes nearby towns like Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, or Palm Desert. Usually offers more resort-style accommodations with pools and golf courses, good if you want a relaxing stay.
- Resorts vs Boutique Hotels: Palm Springs has a range from large resorts with pools and spas to boutique mid-century modern hotels that capture the city’s iconic aesthetic. Choose depending on whether you want a full-service resort experience or a quieter, stylish stay.
Additional Tips:
- Book accommodations early, especially for September, as weekends can fill up due to moderate weather and festivals.
- For Joshua Tree, consider staying one night in the park if possible (e.g., campgrounds or park lodges) to experience sunrise and sunset without a long drive.
- Bring layers for Joshua Tree evenings; even September can have chilly desert nights.
- Plan park visits early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the warmest part of the day and to enjoy better lighting for photography.
Overall, a combination of Twentynine Palms or Yucca Valley for Joshua Tree and downtown or nearby Palm Springs for the city stay offers convenience, good access, and a variety of lodging experiences.
