8-15 Dec or 15-22 Dec for snow/ski
Hi, may I know if the ski resorts around Beijing will usually open before 15 Dec? we would like to bring our kids there for simple skiing and some snow play. We are currently choosing between the 2nd or 3rd week of December... is there a big difference in the crowd level? weather? Thanks a lot!
Ski resorts around Beijing typically start their winter season in early to mid-December, depending on weather conditions and snowmaking capabilities. For casual skiing and snow play, most resorts aim to open at least some beginner slopes by the first or second week of December.
Regarding your choice between 8–15 December and 15–22 December:
- Opening of slopes: By 8–15 December, some resorts may have limited terrain open, mostly beginner areas with artificial snow. By 15–22 December, more slopes are generally operational as snow accumulation increases and resorts ramp up snowmaking.
- Crowd levels: Early December (8–15) tends to be quieter, as it is before the peak holiday season. Mid to late December (15–22) can see slightly more visitors, particularly on weekends, but it is still far less crowded than the Chinese New Year period.
- Weather: Average temperatures in Beijing and nearby resorts in December range from -5°C to 5°C (23°F–41°F). The second week of December may be slightly warmer than the third week, but both periods are suitable for snow activities, especially with snowmaking.
- Suitability for kids: Early December may have fewer open slopes, but beginner-friendly areas for snow play are usually available. Later December offers more variety for skiing and snow activities, but slightly larger crowds.
Additional tips:
- Check the resort websites a few days before your trip to confirm open slopes and snow conditions, as artificial snow production can adjust opening dates.
- Book rentals and lessons in advance if you are bringing children, to ensure availability and minimize waiting times.
- Dress in layers and bring waterproof gear, as temperatures are low and children will spend time playing in snow as well as skiing.
In summary, both periods are feasible for a family ski trip. If you prefer quieter slopes and are okay with limited terrain, 8–15 December is suitable. If you want more slopes open and slightly better snow coverage, 15–22 December is preferable, with only a minor increase in visitors.
