Alaska lodge to lodge hiking trip

We just went on a phenomenal lodge to lodge hiking trip in Alaska (9 days 8 nights). It was operated by Alaska Wildland Adventures (AWA), and formerly they ran it on behalf of REI.

I have never been on an REI trip, but AWA did an exceptional job of it. It was active enough for us and they were very adaptable to adding on more hikes as we wanted to put more miles on our hiking boots. There are certainly opportunities to hike less if one chooses to do so. Lodging and food were all high quality.

I left a detailed review on the trip on AWA’s TripAdvisor review page.

We covered a lot in 9 days but it didn’t feel rushed.

Amazing company who offers other tours too.

Just wanted to put it out there for folks who w were e considering going to Alaska on an REI-like trip.

If you are considering a lodge-to-lodge hiking trip in Alaska, Alaska Wildland Adventures (AWA) is an excellent operator to explore. They offer multi-day, fully guided trips that combine hiking, lodging, and meals, similar to what REI offers on their adventure trips.

Here are some highlights and details from a recent 9-day, 8-night trip with AWA:

  • Activity Level: The trip offers a balanced mix of moderate to challenging hikes, but it is adaptable. Participants can choose to do additional miles if they want more physical activity, or hike less for a more relaxed pace.
  • Lodging: Lodges along the route are comfortable and well-maintained, providing a cozy base each night after hiking.
  • Food: Meals are high quality and included, often with hearty portions suitable for active hikers.
  • Flexibility: Guides are attentive and can adjust the hiking itinerary based on participants’ energy levels and interests, allowing for optional side hikes or rest time.

The itinerary covers a lot of ground, but the pace is designed to feel comfortable rather than rushed. You get to experience varied landscapes and wildlife while still having time to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Additional notes and considerations:

  • AWA also offers other types of tours in Alaska, ranging from single-day hikes to extended wilderness adventures.
  • For those unfamiliar with REI trips, this type of guided experience provides a similar level of organization, safety, and support, but without needing to be an REI member.
  • Reviews on platforms like TripAdvisor consistently highlight the professionalism of guides, the quality of lodging, and the adaptability of the itineraries.

Overall, a lodge-to-lodge hiking trip with Alaska Wildland Adventures is highly recommended for anyone looking to combine active hiking with the comfort of lodge accommodations and the convenience of organized logistics. Whether you are an experienced hiker or just looking for a well-supported Alaskan adventure, this type of trip allows you to fully immerse yourself in Alaska’s wilderness with minimal planning stress.
