Maui with teen

Hello, I'll be staying in Maui with my teenage grandchildren in a couple of weeks (July). It's a last minute vacation, four nights, three full days, and we'll be going to Waikiki after. I know they would prefer to be around busier parts with things to do. I would like to be on the beach and find a hotel with nice pool, semi upscale, maybe activities. Is this possible? I see that many hotels are already booked up. Should I rent a car? Once I find and book the hotels, I'll be looking to fill our days/evenings after the beach.

For a last-minute Maui trip with teenage grandchildren in July, it’s still possible to find hotels that cater to beach access, pools, and activities, though availability may be limited. Since your teens prefer busier areas with things to do, you’ll want to focus on locations like Ka’anapali, Wailea, or Lahaina. These areas offer a mix of resorts, shopping, dining, and activity options within walking distance or a short drive.

Here are some hotel/resort considerations:

  • Ka’anapali Beach Resort area: Many resorts here have multiple pools, beachfront access, and kid/teen-friendly activities like paddleboarding, snorkeling, and cultural programs. Even semi-upscale resorts offer evening entertainment and easy access to shopping and casual dining in Whalers Village.
  • Wailea Resort area: Known for luxury and upscale resorts, most with large pools, beachfront access, and activities like snorkel lessons or tennis. The area is quieter than Ka’anapali but still has great beaches and high-end dining options.
  • Lahaina town: Boutique hotels and vacation rentals closer to nightlife, shops, and restaurants. Beach access may vary, but you can enjoy more walking and exploration options with teens, including art galleries, local shops, and casual eateries.

Regarding car rental:

  • Yes, renting a car is highly recommended, even if you are staying in a busier resort area. It gives you flexibility to explore beaches, hiking spots, and attractions outside your hotel area. Parking is generally available at resorts, and a car allows for day trips to areas like Iao Valley, Upcountry Maui, or the Road to Hana (partial or full if desired).

Activities and things to do after beach time:

  • Snorkeling trips or boat excursions from Lahaina or Ka’anapali
  • Paddleboarding, kayaking, or surf lessons at Ka’anapali or Wailea beaches
  • Exploring historic Lahaina town with its shops, galleries, and Banyan Tree Park
  • Evening entertainment: Luaus are fun for teens and adults alike, offering food, music, and cultural performances
  • Hiking options: short trails like Iao Valley State Park or Twin Falls along the Road to Hana
  • Shopping and dining: Whalers Village at Ka’anapali or Shops at Wailea for casual meals and ice cream treats

Booking tips for a last-minute trip:

  • Check both direct hotel websites and booking platforms for last-minute deals or cancellations
  • Consider vacation rentals with pools and beach access, which may be more available than resorts
  • Be flexible on exact beachside rooms; even a short walk to the beach can work with teens and provide pool access

With careful selection and a rental car, you can have a mix of beach, pool, and activity-filled days for your teens while still enjoying semi-upscale accommodations.
