Help me plan my Colorado trip!
Hi! I’m visiting Colorado in late November or December, but I need help deciding which towns to visit. My top choices are: Crested Butte, Aspen, Breckenridge, Vail, and Telluride. I would love to go to every one, but unfortunately I know that’s not realistic. So, which are most worth it? And which should I eliminate? Crested Butte is non-negotiable. I would love to do Telluride too, but I know it’s so remote which makes it hard to access without a ton of travel time. And I definitely want to minimize travel time and maximize activity time! I will only have 5 or 6 days. Are any of these towns super similar so it’s not worth doing both? What’s the best way to travel between certain towns as efficiently as possible? Open to any and all suggestions! Just want to see as many towns as possible and as much Christmas and snow activities as possible…but also being realistic and not spending hours in the car. Thanks in advance!!
For a 5–6 day trip to Colorado in late November or December, prioritizing Crested Butte and Telluride, while still seeing other iconic mountain towns, requires a balance between minimizing driving and maximizing time to enjoy activities like skiing, snow sports, and Christmas festivities. Late November–December is early ski season, so some resorts may not be fully open yet, but towns like Breckenridge, Vail, and Aspen still offer festive activities, winter walking streets, and charming town centers.
Top priorities and suggested itinerary:
- Crested Butte: Non-negotiable for you. Known for its quaint downtown, historic buildings, and excellent skiing if conditions allow. Spend 1–2 full days here, depending on your interests.
- Telluride: Remote but spectacular. If you want to experience it, plan for 1–2 days. Driving from Crested Butte to Telluride can take around 4–5 hours via US-50 and CO-145. Consider flying into Montrose Regional Airport (closest to Telluride) to save time if your schedule is tight.
- Breckenridge vs. Vail: Both are classic Colorado ski towns with historic charm, shopping, and winter activities. They are somewhat similar, so for a short trip, choose one to minimize driving. Breckenridge is slightly closer to Denver and offers a cozy, historic feel with festive decorations in early December. Vail is larger, more resort-like, and upscale.
- Aspen: Iconic and beautiful, but it is farther north and adds significant travel time if combined with Telluride and Crested Butte. If time is limited, consider skipping Aspen in favor of maximizing Crested Butte and Telluride.
Sample 5–6 day itinerary maximizing towns and winter activities:
- Day 1: Arrive in Denver or Grand Junction, drive to Crested Butte. Explore town, enjoy local dining.
- Day 2: Full day in Crested Butte – winter hiking, skiing, or snowshoeing depending on conditions.
- Day 3: Drive to Telluride (or fly into Montrose for shorter travel). Explore town, enjoy gondola rides and scenic views.
- Day 4: Full day in Telluride – skiing, snow activities, and town strolls.
- Day 5: Drive toward Breckenridge or Vail, depending on your preference. Evening in town enjoying holiday lights, shopping, and festive atmosphere.
- Day 6 (optional): Morning activities in Breckenridge or Vail, then head to Denver for departure.
Travel efficiency tips:
- Use Montrose Regional Airport for Telluride to save long driving time.
- Consider staying overnight mid-route if driving from Crested Butte to Telluride feels long — for example, in Ridgway or Ouray.
- Rent a car with all-wheel drive or 4WD as mountain roads in late November/December can be snowy and icy.
- Limit the number of towns to maximize time enjoying each destination instead of spending too many hours driving.
Recommendation for town prioritization:
- Must-see: Crested Butte
- Highly recommended if feasible: Telluride
- Pick one: Breckenridge or Vail (both offer festive winter atmosphere and skiing)
- Skip: Aspen, unless you have extra days, as it adds significant travel time and is somewhat similar in experience to Vail.
With this plan, you maximize your time in the iconic, picturesque mountain towns, enjoy winter activities, and minimize unnecessary driving. Focus on Crested Butte, Telluride, and one other ski town for the most fulfilling 5–6 day Colorado trip.
